Hagstrom
Description
A collaboration between the design team at Hagstrom and “Papa Emeritus” and the Ghouls of the band Ghost, Fantomen (Swedish for “The Fantom”) transports Hagstrom’s legendary playability and technical excellence into a new, edgier realm.

Hagstrom started with an elegantly asymmetrical solid-mahogany body to which they joined a mahogany neck using a classic mortise-and-tenon neck joint system. Since it’s a Hagstrom, the Fantomen uses the H-Expander truss rod and Resinator fingerboard, providing the ultimate in playing surface stability and optimal tonal enhancement. Together these components create an incredibly stable, resonant and responsive sonic foundation.

With a relatively thin 1¼ in. (3.5cm) body, the Fantomen is beautifully balanced and surprisingly lightweight. A 25.5 in. (648mm) scale provides a slightly sharper attack and more sustain than classic 24.75 in. scale guitars. A neck joint design that provides total, unrestricted access to all 22 frets will meet the needs of even the most virtuosic player.

The goal was to equip the Fantomen with electronics that would allow for a varied tonal pallet ranging from classic, vintage colors to screaming metallic brilliance. Hagstrom worked with Swedish pickup guru Johan Lundgren, designer of pickups used by artists such as Meshuggah’s Martin Hagström (no relation).

Lundgren recommended two different humbucker designs: No. 2 in the neck position and No. 5 in the bridge position. The result covers an immense expressive range; from smooth, warm tones to the kind of attack and intense dynamic output that would satisfy the demands of even the most extreme musical styles. Each pickup can be split to single-coil mode by means of push/pull switches incorporated into the tone controls for even more sonic flexibility. This guitar speaks with many distinct voices.

You can find the Fantomen on stage with Ghost during their 2017 Popestar tour, but you don’t have to be a Nameless Ghoul to play one, and you can order one now that's identical in every way to the Fantomen used by the Ghouls.

Had seen these for a while now but never pulled the trigger because they were never in a store. Went to a big city and played one. I bought it within 10 minutes of playing it. Lovely pickups that you can tone chase with very nicely. Lots of variety with the push pull single coil feature. The body is HUGE and i love it. Only downside is no bag included, and with the very large shapely body, finding a case may prove difficult.

Literally cannot be more pleased with this beauty! Got the tobacco finish - looks like it could have been on any big rock band tour bus in the 70's. Neck is 80's Gibson-esque on a diet (think moderately thin "C") - very comfortable and fast. Similarly, fretboard has a SG-type feel; 15 radius means slightly flat feel, but not so broad that it feels like a 2X4. The "Resonator" material has gotten some dings on a few reviews. It does have different feel than more familiar materials. I would say it feels "drier" than more porous woods but not sticky or cumbersome and, it is very resonant. Notes sing on and on. Fretsare consistent, comfortable, and plecked smooth. The big happy surprise = Lundgren style PUPS. Bright and responsive without being brittle; thick in the right places without being muddy; and responds fantastic to mid to mid-high overdrive. The articulation in bridge pickup shines - note separation is as good as anything I've played and heard. Low compression so notes pop out without having to attack the string (reminds me of Priest's "British Steel" sound). Neck pickup has a softer attack and can handle Blues or arpeggios very well. Together they are balanced without getting a confused sound. Coil tap gives the axe versatility and can offer a clean, snappy sound. Hardware feels solid and looks sturdy. Hardware, plecking, binding - all excellent. For anyone who thinks only Gibson can make offset beasts that rock, seriously - do yourself a favor and just try this axe!!

Fantastic guitar! I honestly can't put it down, my poor Les Paul is collecting dust now lol. The guitar is Chinese made (if that matters to you) but the build quality is still fantastic. The only issue I had was the volume knobs falling off and that was a quick 30-second fix. The guitar feels and plays great. It comes with D'Adarrio strings since then I've changed them to Ernie ball and then back to D'Addario. The D'Addarios are simply better in my opinion. The neck to me feels similar to an SG's, nice and easy to get your hand around. It's a bit heavier than a Les Paul which is perfect for me as I prefer a slightly heavier guitar. The RD shape does take a little getting used to coming from Strats and Les Pauls but its nothing too crazy. I was very curious about Hagstrom's "Resinator" fretboard it sounded interesting and seems to be very effective! It plays exceptionally well, I've had a couple of more talented friends try it out and they all love the way it plays and feels. Overall, it's a quality well-built guitar definitely worth the $$. Quite the eye catcher too! I'm pretty sure I'll be picking up the black one too in the future.

This is my first Hagstrom product. I'm normally very wary of Chinese guitars. I normally play American PRS and Fender. I pre-ordered this from another vendor that I was able to get over a week ago. I'm a full time touring musician and I play alternative and heavy rock. I ordered this because I'm a big ghost fan and I have wanted a Gibson firebird or Ernie Ball State. Vincent. This is the best of both. So I went for it...and I'm very glad I did. This is a sturdy guitar. The set neck joint is comfortable and strong. The neck is more of a thin flat (not a big Les Paul neck) think American Elite strat meets Custom 24. The scale is great. The well groomed frets and the fret board (a wood Hagstrom makes that is like ebony but less high maintenance) make it an easy smooth play and that paired with the mahogany body give amazing sustain and natural note decay. The hardware is very sturdy and the tuners are precise but not "touchy" or "jumpy". The electronics are solid. I have no worries that is gonna junk out mid show. It feels like a we'll built and road Worthy gigging guitar. The jack is responsive and inset which I love. Even the pickup selector is VERY SOLID. The guitar is made well. The pickups are responsive with a vintage feel. They seem sort of like a PAF emulation but maybe more mid range. Which is good because we now it's all about the mids. The only thing I'm not surprised stoked about is the coil tap doesn't really give me much more tonal variety, it's mostly just a noticeable drop in volume. Which can also be beneficial if you play a single channel amp like I do. I like these pickups but this isn't going to be a metal guitar per session, think doom rock or alternative metal and you'll be golden pony boy. The finish on this guitar is beautiful. It's like a black mirror it's so high gloss. The binding on the body and fretboard is down well. It's clean with no flaws. I guess I should mention I have the black on black version. Overall I say buy this.
