Mark Agnesi Talks About The SG Standard '61 Model

Gibson

Description

Reviving a well-loved electric guitar design with a return to its roots, Gibson's SG Standard 61 with the iconic sideways-pull Maestro Vibrola tailpiece brings back a true classic. Found on the very earliest 1960s models, this tailpiece adds smooth and subtle vibrato effects to the classic SG styling. The mahogany body features a deeply sculpted body scarfng, a 5-ply teardrop pickguard and a 22nd-fret neck joint. The nickel-plated hardware includes a classic ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge and keystone tuners in addition to the sideways Vibrola tailpiece. The pickups are 61R and 61T humbuckers for a classic voice with added power and top end. Controls feature audio taper potentiometers and Orange Drop capacitors.

I got this guitar as a collection to my ministry,I'm favored bye the novelty history of its replication nature ,the vibrola was not popular with most stage performances in fact disliked, but it was the first of its les paul kind called a les paul ,I don't like or use the vibrola but it's good history ,les paul dis owned the model Gibson liked kept it on and discontinued the vibrola and renamed it a Sg the guitar got popular without the vibrola, history since! Nice hardware great tones

This is a guitar I would love to own. It is a very cool guitar indeed. This is what I would buy if I save up plenty of money. This guitar is what I would call the Holy Grail of all solid body electric guitars because it has the sideways vibrato arm on it. IT does not get any better than this at all.

Have been looking at this since it came out and was planning on taking one home until I spent some time playing it. The low E string pops out of place from the bridge every few minutes. I knew there would be some tuning issues with the vibrola but this thing was going out of tune everytime you touched the thing. Still was going to buy it at this point until I checked the body over. The neck joint had pink glue that came out and left half an inch trail. Back of the body had marks that needed to be buffed out as well. The price certainly does not reflect the quality. Quality control needs to be revamped at Gibson.

Got one and what an Incredible Guitar, yes out of the box theres a few adjustments like most guitars and yes the sideways vibrola goes out of tune alot at first. But once you play it a while and slide your strings a few times threw the neck nut. Stretch the strings out and know your not using a Floyd Rose with a locking nut! Instead do small pitch shifting and not just divebomb it holds tune fairly well. I've owned the 61 Sg Maestro before and it could be the luck of the draw but this one stays in tune just as well as that one did. Its usually at the nut binding because of the arched headstock, not necessary the vibrato system. This is my 8th Gibson Sg and the sound is the best I've had in almost any guitar. The feel is addictive, and the looks are breathtaking. This guitar is worth its value just hanging on the wall as art.
