My first Gibson and it is quality top to toe

Gibson SG Special 2018 Review After having played guitar for 40 years I was recently turned on to the SG body style so I started looking for local stock. On Friday October 20th 2017 I went to one GC location in MI to consider trading in my PRS S2 for a 2016 SG Special HP with a ridiculously good clearance price but the G Force tuners quickly shouted 40 miles of bad road. If I had been willing to replace the tuners, it could have been a great deal. The guitar was beautiful but between the tuners, existing setup and feel of the neck in my hands, I did not feel the connection I needed and decided it would be a bad move for me. While there I played a 2018 SG Special in Natural Satin -which is the guitar being reviewed here- and it was perfect in every way with regards to quality. It was full price and out of my planned budget, but I left the store feeling a wow factor for the 2018 Special. The following day I decided to return something and went to my usual store in Southfield. They received delivery of this model two days before so it had not been on the wall very long. I played it, loved it and had the store luthier -who is a trusted friend and advisor- give it a five minute tweak and decided to buy it then and there. I love this guitar for the following reasons. 1. The light weight body, 2. The Mini HB's, 3. The satin finish on body and back of neck, 4. Action, 5. Clean and OD tones, 6. Fret finishing and level I have played many Gibson Les Paul's but never bought one. I have played one Gibson SG belonging to a friend last month and it is significant -to me at least- that this is the first Gibson that drew me in. Say what you want about Gibson these days, or rant about -addyourowncomplainthere- but I played two of this same model in two days and for the price I paid for mine I am confident I got what I was looking for. I know I paid a lot for the Brand name but I also got the quality I expected from that name.

Every year quality control goes down.

I have a 2006 sg standard plus top I play the heck out of. This year was right before Gibson took a dip in sales and quality yet again. I recently went to Guitar Center bellingham and found this special sitting on the wall. Upon picking it up the fret ends were digging into my fingers and the neck paint felt splotched and sticky. Keep in mind I walked in the hour it was unboxed. I decided to plug it In to test it with my 06 I brought in to fiddle with and the 2018 was horrible. Not only did my sg sustain longer, it was intonated and the attention to detail was far better. I must say the 2018 looked good at a distance but lacked setup and qc. I herd the whole mess about Gibson's quality control and wanted to get answers and I did.

It is what it is, a no frills SG. Fit and finish are fine; electronics do what they're supposed to. Nice tone from the mini-humbuckers, especially the neck position (to my taste). A classic design at a good price point.

  • Great guitar but the picture is misleading.

I picked this up on a daily sale via email. It was shipped very fast and arrived with no issues. Upon inspection of the guitar, there were a few borderline sharp edge frets but after the guitar sat inside overnight, they went away. (I live in Illinois and it was cold during shipment from KC.) The feet board feels nice and smooth although it was dusty from the manufacturer and the frets were polished nicely and were smooth. The guitar has a nice smooth 60's profile and the body is finished nicely and smoothly. My guitar has a beautiful woodgrain and is a one piece body. (Or the seam is very well hidden). The electronics are typical of the model and the mini humbuckers sound pretty good. They're nice and punchy. Overall, I'm happy with this guitar although the color in the picture is misleading. It is not as light as the picture shows. It is darker. It isn't a dark brown color but it is not light like the picture. I know that might not sound like a big deal to most but I was a bit disappointed. The padded gig bag that Gibson uses now, in my opinion, is awesome. It is far superior to the one they used to have. A great guitar for the money and it would be 5 stars if not for the color. Check out out.

Always wanted an SG, and I just happened to come across this fantastic SG Special on SALE! This is last year's model, so these prices are close to closeout. And might I say, what a fantastic deal. I chose the "natural satin" finish. If you're worried about the color in person, it's not nearly as blonde-wooded as the picture suggests. In fact, not even close. It's more like a lighter, yet still rich Bourbon color that's often offered for specials. If you wanted that blonde look, at least feel comforted that it's lighter than normal mahogany. What had me immediately excited for the 2018 Special were the block inlays, which look far classier than the simple, budget friendly dots. The mini-humbuckers, which are interchangeable with P-90s mind you, are not only covered, but a very unique offering. The only flaws I could find (and I'm an absolute flaw scavenger!) are small imperfections in the paint, namely a few locations where sawdust must've been caught underneath. As well, the beveled horns are slightly rough in two locations. These are minor concerns that no sane human would care about. As for the sound quality? I'm a novice, and this will be my first guitar I practice on, so I can't comment on that :) Get back to me in a few years! But cosmetically and feel-wise, this is a VERY lightweight, eye-catching guitar that will easily retain good value as an American made instrument. Not to mention the rosewood fretboard, which is being left off of all but the most expensive guitars in the Fender line (gotta love Gibson for that). I definitely recommend this stellar instrument. By the way, the HEAVILY padded gig bag is phenomenal. Those are the thickest walls of any bag I've ever seen.

I get impressed of te sound quality of this beautiful rock machine. I love the acustical sound because you can practice even When it's unplugged. And the best of all is that includes an excellent gig bag

After purging my inventory which I had accumulated over the past 25 plus years, I finally purchased a Gibson guitar. I have always had "working-man's" guitars like a MIJ Strat(killer instrument), a Fernandes Tele(another killer) and an Epiphone Les Paul(Gibson on the truss rod cover), but never an American made classic. This SG Special(Natural Satin Finish) had been hanging in my local GC for all of 2018 and on several occasions, I picked it up and noodled. I loved it from the get-go. The look of the instrument is simple yet elegant, the neck is smooth and fast and the tones and output from the mini-humbuckers ranged from sweet and twangy to an out and out growl. This floor model was marked for sale for quite some time and when it went to Clearance, I pounced. Aside from the well documented static noise issue generated by the plastic pick guard(reason for 4 stars instead of five), I am beyond thrilled with this beautiful instrument. I addressed the static issue by cranking a humidifier in my dry basement and wipe with a dryer sheet if necessary(I live in the cold northeast and assume that this will not be an issue during the other 3 seasons). The gig bag it came with is hardly a gig bag and more a soft case. Beautiful leather with Gibson embroidered on the pocket. I have played it through both tube amp(Fender Blues Jr) and solid state(Roland JC120) and it sings through both. The mini humbuckers coupled with an simple distortion pedal(MXR Prime Distortion) sound monstrous! This may sound dramatic(too bad) but I feel like I now have a weapon in my hands that will change the game for me as a player. This battle axe is about to be tested on stage and I am pumped to let loose with it! Quite frankly, I DO NOT want to recommend this as I selfishly would like to be the only guy around with this incredible guitar. Haha...

What is the "Static noise in Dry Climate" issue that has been mentioned? What is the cause and what is the permanent solution?

    Open Reply - Charles
Dry climates may affect the humidity in a guitar so the solution would be a humidifier in your guitar case.
