Perfect for simple recording needs
I use my Fostex MR-8 for simple home recordings. Whether it's just laying down random riffs or ideas or laying down an entire demo with guitars, bass and vocals this recorder is all I need. I haven't tried recording drums with it so I have no idea how well it would come across. The built-in effects aren't anything that I've ever used, they're pretty average. If you're going to be doing a lot of multi-track recording you'll want a larger CompactFlash card as the 128 mbs sometimes runs out before I'm finished with a song. The recorder's menus are extremely easy to navigate after thumbing through the manual for a few minutes. The built-in mic is handy for recording on the fly, although as expected sound quality becomes an issue when not using an actually line-in microphone. Great home recording at an affordable price.

I've used better
Well I got this recorder about 8 months ago and it has its ups and downs. Some days it works fine to do recordings on and the sound is some what amazing, but after a few recordings it says that the card is full and its a 8gb card with two songs on it that are like 2 minute long guitar duets. For me i have seen and used better, but hopefully if you get one, it'll be more bang for your buck than it has been for me.

Very Easy To Use

This thing is so amazing. It is simple, basic, and reliable. I have had it for over a year and have made over a hundred recordings. I find it indispensible as a practical tool for honing my playing/singing skills. Being able to listen to my practice recordings has drastically improved my basic musicianship. The controls are very intuitive, the menu structure is very well organized. I was able to make my first 4 track recording (drum machine, bass, vocals 1, and vocals 2) within about an hour - without any prior multitrack recording experience. I just can't say enough good things about this. I just wish it could record more than two tracks simultaneously.

My needs are pretty basic when it comes to recording. I want simple controls, ease of use, quality sound, and a straight-forward instruction manual. Couple these requirements with the ability to mix and convert tracks to WAV format; and that is what you have in this unit. I've made several recording and they have all turned out above my expectations. However, I am just recording acoustic guitar and vocals. This may not be right for recording a full band, but it's perfect for me.

I was slightly skeptical about this unit at first, but after using it for a month I'm glad I spent the cash. It is super easy to use, intuitive, and it makes amazing recordings considering the investment. The mic modeling is cool, and the reverb is usable. The amp modeling is OK, but as with most modeling it is doesn't have much oomph behind it- I don't use it for recording. Bouncing tracks is cake, and you can copy tracks to other tracks to fatten things up. You will need to buy a bigger card, though, the one it comes with doesn't even have enough memory for one multi-track song + the WAV conversion for download. All-in-All this is an insane value for people getting started.

At first i was having hard time recording on computer, so i decided to pick this up, it took me a good couple recordings to get the sounds and adjusting my levels on my mix boards and other sound effects, this equipment can make your songs sounds just like you in a real studio, it took me good month to figure my settings, after that its a piece of cake, i would recommend this if u on a tight budget, you just gotta make sound great, my friends love the way how it records, what else can i say? i love this lil machine, im thinkin up grade for a 16 tracks for my productions.
