Exploring the Player Plus Telecaster Models | Fender

Description

The Fender Player Plus Telecaster offers pro performance without the pro price. Noiseless pickups and locking tuners are game changers for all players. Beginners will appreciate the uber-comfortable feel of the neck. Lead guitarists will find that the flatter fretboard increases soloing speed. Read on to discover if the Player Plus Tele deserves a spot in your stable.

Fender Player Plus Telecaster Main Features

  • Alder body with gloss finish
  • Maple neck with Modern C-profile, maple fretboard
  • Dual Gen 4 Noiseless pickups, push/push activation for series/parallel wiring, 3-way switch
  • Deluxe cast/sealed locking tuners, string-thru body bridge with 6 block steel saddles

Classic Design

The utilitarian design of the Telecaster has withstood the test of time. On the Player Plus, the body is alder, a tonewood that Fender has employed since 1956. Resonant with a balanced tone, it provides a perfect platform for the pickups to shine.

Noiseless Pickups

From Danny Gatton's warm jazz comping to James Burton's chicken picking, Jimmy Page's snarling solo on "Stairway to Heaven" to Jeff Buckley's harp-like sound on "Hallelujah," a Telecaster's tone is surprisingly versatile. You'll get all of that and more on the Player Plus Telecaster, but one thing you won't get is interference. It's spec'd with Gen 4 Noiseless single coils. Wound with Alnico V magnets, the Gen 4 pickups are also high output, making it easier to drive your amplifier to distortion. A push/push pot lets you run the pickups in series for a beefier sound, or in parallel for more traditional tones.

A Neck That Stands Out

The neck on the Player Plus Telecaster deserves special recognition. It has a Modern C shape or "flattened oval" profile that's more ergonomic than others. Rolled fretboard edges give it a worn-in-feel. Unusual for a Tele, the fretboard has a 12" radius, making it easier to bend strings without fretting out.

Updated Hardware

Once you've experienced locking tuners, you'll never want to go back. To change strings on the Player Plus Telecaster, just thread each string, lock, cut and tune it up. The six-saddle bridge offers more exact intonation than on a traditional Tele. Working in concert with the high-ratio tuners, you'll be able to play in tune all night long.

The Fender Player Plus Tele comes with a deluxe gig bag.

  • Intonation is a Clear Issue

Would be a great buy if not for one major problem. The bridge plate screws are rounded and placed directly where the bridge saddles lay. Two problems come from this placement. 1 you can never level the saddles. 2 You cannot intonate the strings. Had to buy a new bridge plate immediately.

  • Great guitar and well setup right out of the box

I have several Telecasters and I really love them. This Telecaster comes with locking tuners which is an upgrade that I have done on my other Telecasters but I don't need to do it on this one. I also love the 12" neck radius and really hope that Fender starts offering more of its guitars with this option. The guitar was well set up right out of the box and frets are perfect. All I did was set the relief to my preference and lowered string height to my preferred action height. Plays and sounds beautiful. #sweepstakes

I love this guitar! It has a great sound, it stays in tune, and the color is gorgeous. I would definitely recommend this guitar to anyone looking for a good telecaster.

The Cosmic Jade green is absolutely beautiful the neck felt comfortable but the pickups were horrible and switching to serial just made bad sound worse brittle and nasty and that was through a Fender Vibrolux all tube amp

  • I returned this guitar the same day I received :(

This guitar is a blast to play. I originally went to the store looking to purchase another Gibson LP. I have all kinds of guitars but never owned or really wanted a Telecaster. The Gibson I checked out did not speak to me and I did not feel like spending thousands more for one that did, I started trying other guitars including PRS and Gretch and did not find anything that excited me. Before leaving I decided to give this one a try, I had received an email weeks ago for the player plus release and loved the "red" colored model. They had one at the store so I plugged it into a 20 watt Marshall head and we bonded instantly. The attack and dynamics of this beauty were amazing, not like any other guitar I owned. The neck felt amazing and was so effortless to play yet, oddly also forced me to play better. I only played it 5 minutes and was hooked. After purchasing the guitar I noticed some issues with the nut, the B string was making a ting noise when I bent the string downward and had some concerns with the electronics because I was getting what sounded like some ground crackle when I anchored my pinky on the pick guard while playing. I reluctantly returned the guitar to the store, the tech took care of the nut issue right away but I figured all telecasters were this magical and found a used American made Tele for the same price at another store out of state and decided to get the US model instead. When it arrived I instantly felt the difference, this was not on par with MIM Player plus Tele. The US model did not play as well or hold tuning and the guitar were not as dynamic, it did not have the same edge. I went the the very next day and got the Player Plus back, the very same one I returned. The Fender Mexico plant is knocking it out of the park these days, I have three Charvel Guitars made in that same plant and those guitars have the same magic. The necks and neck finishes are bar none. Awesome tones!

    Is this guitar heavy?

    Open Reply - Thomas
It's not light. All guitars vary depending on the density of the wood. Manufacturers usually only spec size and type of wood. Guitars are generally between 6 and 12 lbs. They can be more. The only way to know the weight of an individual instrument is to weigh it. This will be approximately 7.5 – 9.0 lbs

Has anyone looked at routing under the pickguard? Can a humbucker or P90 fit in neck position?

    Open Reply - Thomas
    No, it can't.
