Exploring the Kurt Cobain Jag-Stang | Artist Signature Series | Fender

Description
This Kurt Cobain Jag-Stang electric guitar from Fender commemorates the 30th anniversary of Nirvana’s seminal record Nevermind. Few artists in music history can be credited with changing the industry nearly overnight and continuing to influence music culture three decades after the height of their popularity. Kurt Cobain and his bandmates in Nirvana appeared on the scene in the early ‘90s as generational talents who combined raucous, heavy tones, punk-infused energy and melodic hooks to create a sound that quickly attracted millions of fans and established grunge and alternative rock as a genre with legitimate mainstream appeal. Although Kurt was seen playing a variety of Fender guitars over the years, his Fender Jaguar and Mustang remain the most iconic due to their use on the Nevermind tour and “Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video. Kurt designed the Jag-Stang to combine his favorite elements of both instruments and brought it to life with help from the Fender Custom Shop in 1993.

This limited-edition Jag-Stang comes equipped with the same features that made it Kurt’s ideal instrument. The alder body delivers a punchy tone perfect for big power chords, the 24” short-scale reduces string tension for easier playing and the 7.25” radius rosewood fingerboard with maple neck has a comfortable feel. The vintage-style single-coil and custom humbucking pickups are perfect for recreating Kurt’s classic tones, while the Mustang slider switches provide the flexibility to dial in four distinct settings for a variety of in- or out-of-phase tones.

I've had my Fiesta Red Jag-Stang for 2 years now and I love it. It has a lot of options for different sounds. I enjoy playing punk rock and 90's rock music so it's a great fit for me. It honestly comes with a lot of different features that you don't get with many guitars. The tremolo bar, the humbucker, the single coil, and the Mustang switches get out-of-phase sounds. It also feels comfortable whether sitting or standing with a strap (surprisingly because of it's shape). It's a smaller guitar and easy to handle I'd say.

Really good guitar for nirvana type music. Only issue is that you need to set it up for it to be playable but once it's set up it's a great instrument. Pickups are pretty articulate but not to bright either just perfectly balanced. If you get one I recommend to lock the bridge down to improve its tuning stability and sustain. Note it DOES NOT sound like a kc style mustang, it has its own sort of sound to it. Fretboard is pretty nice same with the low radius which I prefer. Overall it's one of my favorite guitars I've ever bought and I cannot recommend it enough if you play grunge and nirvana music.

  • Nostalgic Sound. Worth it.

Guitar is pretty average all around. You have the typical mustang trem so be prepared to spend some time dialing it in. Electronics are somewhat dark but a step up from the old MIJ model. Mine instrument is pretty heavy, requires quite a bit of set up work. The fit and finish are all pretty good. Gigbag isn't the best. I have experience doing my own setup work and with a little time got it up to my standard but it did require taking the trem apart a few times, the neck off a few times, the neck to be shimmed, and a couple frets filed down just a hair but I like my action to be pretty low!

I don't think this guitar will be for everyone. It won't have the broad appeal of a Stratocaster or a les paul. However if you like the Fender Mustang and want something similar but with a more unique look this is a great option. The guitar is light weight and sits well, I haven't played it standing yet but I don't see that being a problem. The neck is actually really nice, I personally love 7.25 radius boards and found myself at home in this. I usually dislike necks with any lacquer and will lightly sand them with scotch bright to make them less sticky. This neck feels great though, I don't see myself having to do anything with that. There was some minor fret sprout but nothing too sharp that I had to file down right away, just not as smooth as I normally like. Some people often comment that the pickups with Jagstangs are not impressive and they swap them and at first I agreed, however im starting to really enjoy them. The neck puckup gives you that Fender single coil sound but a touch warmer than a typical Strat would be. The bridge humbucker is actually quite nice with some fuzz and distortion. I don't think this guitar is going to be a 5/5 for everyone, but it was everything I wanted and more. If you want a different looking mustang this is a great option. If you want a Jaguar, you may be disappointed.
