Description
Fender's American Standard Jazz Bass scored a giant bass hit with its introduction in 1960. With its sleek offset body; thin, fast neck and rich, growling tone, it was a raring, roaring racecar of a bass that quickly established itself as a must-have instrument. The new American Standard Jazz Bass is an even finer instrument; a modern interpretation of a classic built for modern players.

Features include a high-mass vintage bridge, Fender Custom Shop '60s Jazz Bass single-coil pickups, thinner finish undercoat that lets the body breathe and improves resonance, improved Fender tuners that are 30 percent lighter while keeping the classic look, richer and deeper neck tint for a more elegant appearance, great-looking gloss rosewood fingerboard, satin neck back for smooth playability and Fender Tolex case.

It grew on me!

I know its hard to believe and american standard fender jazz bass "grew on me" however before i owned one of these i had a squier vintage modified and i also had a squier vintage vibe. which i loved both, but traded in to get money for the american standard jazz bass. So, at first i was like, wow, did i just pay all this money to have a bass that sounds and feels very comparable to my past squiers? so, a few months go by, and i have a little bit more cash to spend on getting a back up bass. at this time i am happy with my american standard, but still wondered if i payed too much for this bass. So i went into a local music shop, who is an authorized fender dealer. I picked up a squier, and instantly i saw all the subtle difference that my american standard fender has. all i can say is wow. First thing i noticed is how solid the neck is on my american standard. The neck is so so much more solid feeling. the second thing i noticed, is buzzing. my american fender doesn't buzz at all! most of the squiers did. I guess the moral of the story is. There are a lot of little subtle things that make the american standards so special, and now i can really understand why they are much more expensive, from the neck, to the pick ups to the smoother machine heads to the high mass bridge and stung through option. all the way down to how smooth the body and neck is, even the pickups have smooth edges, where as the squiers seem to have a lot of rough spots. like the time wasn't put into it. I will say though, i picked up a nice squier p bass special that day. they actually don't make those anymore in the squier line. so that was a nice steal

Poor Neck quality

I have having trouble with neck adjustment ever since purchased my 2011 Fender Jazz Bass. It seems as though the neck woods were not properly aged. Now the truss rod is at it's max. A real disappointment. It was strung with heavy nickel strings originally and the neck has a content bow in it.

I am going to do the down side first. This bass was ordered on line NEW. Checking the serial number it shows that it was built in 2012. So it has been around since then. There were fine scratches all over the back and there is a pick mark near the front of the upper horn. I can only conclude that it has been hanging in a store for some time and played and re-packed. I don't like Guitar Centers policy of letting everyone off the street play anything in the store with out any sort of supervision. That is why I ordered it on line. Now since I got it at a discount I am not very concerned with this aspect. However I am mentioning this just as a heads up. When you get a guitar or bass from a preceding series this will happen now and then. That is why it gets 4 stars. Now for the good side. This American Standard Jazz Bass is a wonderful instrument. If it had been delivered to me at the gig I would have been able to play it out of the case with out any difficulty. Mine came with strap, all tools necessary for tweeking, and a cord. I am primarily a Precision guy. So I am gradually getting use to the tone which is noticeably brighter. The Bass seems to be slightly less in gain than the Precision's that I have but only slightly. I am constantly adjusting string height and truss rods on all my basses. I don't have a lot of strength in my left hand and I like them low. It was no problem to set the action to my liking. It took only 1/4 of a turn on the rod to put it right. I cannot understand all the harping about fret buzz. I have had no trouble adjusting that out on any instrument I have ever owned. However, you get a lemon now and then but GC Will Make It Right.. The Jazz base has a thinner neck and will be more prone to move on you (due to atmospheric and humidity conditions) than some wider neck models so keep you T-wrench handy. Plays Great, Sounds Great and I couldn't ask for a any more. I'm 68,and a bass player since1966'.

I'm very satisfied with the sounds quality of this bass the construction and overall playability. I'm sure you could spend more for a higher quality bass but for the price it's very reasonable.

My first bass was an Ibanez in the late 70s. I started playing Fenders after my first band and it was a game changer for me. Played a few of those thru the years. Quit bands for awhile sold my Fender PJ which was a mistake and bought an 80s Ibanez payed a good price was a good bass but it never satisfied me. Haven't had a bass for a few years until about 2 years ago I bought a Mexican Jazz vibe it sounded good but had an issue of a bowed neck but the sound was not a true Fender. So I bought an American Jazz now everything is good. Not sure if it is for beginners but it's one that you will never need to move up.

I've started playing Bass since 1992. Since then, I've owned several beginner brands. Not until a fellow veteran offered me his 2004 American Standard Precision that got me to play more and more. Because I was blown away by its tone and attitude, it even leads me to get a 2013 Gibson Thunderbird to have the best of both worlds. I thought that was it, but surely doesn't feel complete. So I went to try other Bass guitars in order to find that perfect balance. The American Jazz Bass was the answer. The feel and how the instrument carries itself, you can't ask for anything else. A remarkable instrument! Job well done, Fender. Many thanks to Guitar Center for the price paid as well. More power and keep those good deals coming.

  • I would recommend this amazing instrument.
