Erica Synths Hexinverter Mutant HexDrums Analog Drum Synthesizer
Forged from a collaboration between Hexinverter’s Mutant drum circuits and Erica Synths’ industrial design approach, HexDrums is a desktop analog drum synthesizer built for hands-on performance and deep rhythmic control. Its hybrid architecture combines predominantly analog percussion voices with digitally sampled cymbals, delivering classic drum machine punch enhanced by modern sequencing depth and a performance-driven workflow. Designed for live sets, pattern-based composition and studio production, HexDrums offers ten powerful drum voices, individual outputs, stereo processing and an interface that encourages immediate interaction. The result is a focused, no-nonsense instrument that captures the raw energy of vintage analog drums while expanding into contemporary electronic music, techno and industrial production.
Ten Drum Voices Tuned for Analog Impact
At the core of HexDrums are ten drum voices derived from the acclaimed Hexinverter Mutant series, each tuned around musical sweet spots for fast, intuitive sound shaping. The analog section includes two distinct bass drums, a BD9-style VCO kick and an 808-inspired bass drum, alongside machine, snare, clap, rimshot or clave and open and closed hi-hats. Each voice features dedicated controls and its own output, making it easy to sculpt everything from tight techno kicks to aggressive industrial percussion. This voice architecture prioritizes immediacy and character, keeping HexDrums bold and playable in both studio and live environments.
Hybrid Cymbal Engine and Stereo Master Processing
The cymbal section introduces a hybrid approach that blends digital sample playback with analog signal shaping. Ten selectable crash and ride sample sets are available, each with independent pitch and decay control, while the ride cymbal can be looped to create sustained, delay-like or metallic textures. All voices are stereo-panned before reaching the master section, which includes a high-fidelity stereo compressor with threshold, ratio, response, gain and blend controls, plus a master drive circuit derived from the Mutant Glue. This processing chain supports subtle saturation or aggressive distortion while preserving punch, clarity and stereo width.
X0X-Style Sequencing With Advanced Pattern Control
HexDrums features a hands-on X0X-style step sequencer designed for detailed pattern creation and live manipulation. Patterns can extend up to 64 steps, with independent track length, scale and play direction per voice to create complex polymetric rhythms. Sixteen banks of 16 patterns provide deep storage, with USB backup and recall for studio workflows. Song Mode allows patterns to be chained into full arrangements with repeat and stop commands, balancing classic drum machine sequencing with modern flexibility for evolving compositions.
Performance Tools Designed for Live Expression
For live performance, HexDrums includes a suite of expressive per-step tools that keep rhythms dynamic and responsive. Accents can be applied globally or per track, ratchets enable step repeats and probability-based triggering adds controlled variation. Microtiming allows grooves to be pushed slightly off the grid for a more human feel, while track mute, solo, shuffle, roll and instant pattern reload support confident real-time improvisation. These tools are designed to keep performances energetic, flexible and recoverable under pressure.
Connectivity for Hybrid, Modular and Studio Setups
Comprehensive connectivity allows HexDrums to function as a standalone drum machine or the centerpiece of a hybrid rig. MIDI In and Out are available via DIN and USB, alongside analog clock input and output with configurable PPQ for syncing modular and vintage gear. Each voice offers its own line-level output, complemented by a stereo master out and headphone monitoring. With its combination of analog drum synthesis, hybrid cymbals and performance-ready sequencing, Erica Synths HexDrums is a powerful drum machine for producers and performers seeking uncompromising sound, control and modern workflow.
