Best beginner guitar. Period.

This is the perfect guitar for beginners. Solid spruce top, mahogany sides and back. Delivers great sound for someone wanting to try guitar without spending too much money. I own a Epi AJ-200EVS (same family) and I wish they made these guys when I first started. Pretty much the same as any of the 200 family except this 220 has a satin finish on the neck. This is huge! Your hands slide with great ease up and down the neck. Satin finish=slide, poly finish= sticky, clammy hands. The tuners aren't grover, just grover look-a-likes. As you get better just upgrade your string contact points (bone pins, bone saddle and bone nut...maybe better tuners) and your guitar will rival anything less than 1,200 dollars. Of course each guitar does look and sound a bit different, but the general build of this guitar is an amazing deal. I now own a Gibson J-160e (huge beatles fan) and I can say that although the gibby does sound and play better, the 220S isn't that far behind once I upgraded a few things.

Twisted Neck Less Than A Year

There was always a little buzz on the low E, and it took me awhile to realize that the 14th fret was dead all across. After about 6 months, the neck twisted to the point where it's completely unplayable. It's significant enough that you can easily see the twist from across the room. Contacting Epiphone about warranty information now as its past Guitar Center refund period.

    I wanted a good couch guitar to play on and not worry too much about. Absolutely floored by the craftsmanship and sound. I have a masterbilt, but this has its own tonal characteristic that I like.

    I bought this guitar as an AJ-220 4 years ago from my local GC at the recommendation of a sales person who certainly sounded and played like he knew guitars - at the time, I did not. After 4 years of daily practice and playing, and with now 8 much more expensive guitars in my collection (3 acoustics), I can confirm that, as I was told at the time, this guitar plays well above its price. I still very much enjoy playing this guitar. More importantly, the guitar has always held tune very well, it came set up pretty well. I set up and work on my own guitars now and where I've had to work on frets (level and ends), nuts and bridges on even more expensive guitars, I never really had to do anythign to this one other than play it. Two freinds, one just today, bough this guitar on my recommendation as not just a starter guitar, but a credible player for years to come. I highly recommend this guitar. I will add that an acoustic guitar's tone depends heavily on the stings one uses. I've tried 4 or 5 different brands and all impart very different sound to the guitar. I won't make a suggestion here because tone is really very subjective. I will say that the guitar sounded great with the stings that came on it, but I've come to like one of the alternative, though very popular, string brands.

    My first one I bought 6 months ago and just gave it away to a kid who wanted to learn guitar. I liked it so much I bought another one. I've played for 43 years and initially bought this to beat on saving my higher end guitars from wear while writing songs and camp trips. This guitar is not made in China! They are made in Indonesia. These play very well, look good and they have a unique sound(a good one). Time will tell if the wood was well cured before assembly, but just buy one. There's none this good for the price.

    After a 30 odd year lay-off, I got the itch to play again. I am pursuing leaning fingerstyle country blues and the AJ-220 was a good choice. It feels good and sounds good; it's a great guitar.

    Are the Epiphone J-45 Studio and the AJ-220S the same guitar. I did a search for Epiphone J-220S and Guitar Center is showing me a J-45 Studio.
