I've had this pedal for the past few years and hasn't let me down. At times I've had to move it around and move the settings in order to get it to the settings that I want it at but its not hard. I had other pedals by EH but they quickly dissapointed. This is the only that has stayed on my board. It does what I need it to do. If you know how to manipulate this thing then it works great. If you don't then buy another one.
Not as bad as the reviews make it.

I have just recently purchased this pedal even though of the sour reviews of it. I plugged it in and started playing with different volume levels and comp levels and the toggle switch with is very dynamic. I found that this pedal is pretty sweet, now its no keeley, but still it does the job well. The compression can go from funk to country in the turn of a knob. Yes it is a little static-y but you must remember that the gain is like 40 or 50 db which is twice the amount of most boost pedals, so if you crank it up... yea it will get loud, but if you use this pedal correctly it does great. I use this pedal in the studio and on the road and it hasnt failed me yet and It didnt break the bank. If you need some good quality compression and know what you are doing, then this is the pedal for you. or you can go into debt.. get the keeley.
Compressor, or static generator ?

Well I went to my trusty guitar center last night to purchase the boss compressor unit... unfortunately, they were all sold out. The salesman talked me into grudgingly purchasing this little guy instead. I had never heard of this box, but I had heard mostly positive reviews of other electro harmonix pedals, so I though let's give it a shot. I got it home and plugged in, and was instantly underwhelmed by the results... I actually seemed to have LESS sustain the higher I turned the sustain knob, and it only seemed to do anything positive for me with the knob at 12 o' clock. The one thing that this pedal does VERY well is make noise. I plugged in, and even at a medium gain setting it makes terrible feedback, and as soon as you stop playing there's an incredible amount of static, hissing, and crackling coming from my normally crystal clear amp. I thought maybe it was my pickups, so I turned the volume knob all the way down, and there was still a constant hiss. I even put new a new battery in it to no avail. This pedal might be OK for someone who uses VERY low, to no gain. It seemed to do an OK job on the clean channel of my amp, but it still made a lot of noise. In summary, you should only buy this pedal if you want your guitar to sound like your TV when it's set on the wrong channel for your cable box. Absolute garbage. Will be returning this thing today.

I use this pedal, and several other EH pedals, in my bass rig. The fact of the matter is that ALL compressors introduce a certain amount of noise - it's just the nature of the beast. Personally I love this pedal, and it does just what I need. Oh, and it IS true-bypass...most EH pedals are. Grab one, you'll be glad you did.
Not a good pedal at all

I'm sure the effectiveness of this pedal varies SLIGHTLY, emphasis on slight, with different amps. That being said, I am playing out of a Fender Tweed Blues Jr. The most accurate way I can describe what this pedal does when engaged is like throwing a blanket over my amp and creating lots of hum/noise. The small amount of compression it provides is greatly overshadowed by the obnoxious noise it spits out of the amp. This is the first EH product I have used and I was not impressed whatsoever. My advice, save up and buy a Keeley.

I currently own this pedal.I have compared it to major brand names when it came to my decision. The big selling point to me was the maximum gain of 46db!!! I own strats & teles now versus the humbucker guitars, place this pedal first in your effects chain or in front of your amp's gain and WATCH IT GO!!! I love the attack 3way switch, makes it easy to set up.The volume control has so much HEAD ROOM,you'll need to start with small amounts.Make your single coils sing or sting with the right amount of sustain. My sound engineer is bias because he liked my old set up with an overdrive unit,I prefer compression now!!
