Got this along with a EH 44 Magnum amp as a solution for excessive tube amp failure & a back that gets worse with time! Works great as a preamp, but you'll need the dual-channel version to really replace an amp setup. I was able to use an EH Signal Pad to make clean moments happen and it works. Back to the VH4, the gain is just insane, lots of crunch, and every control is super-responsive. Fantastic metal pedal. Unit is slightly bulky, but built solid. And unless your board power has an 18v option (such as Voodoo Lab's), you'll need a spot for the included power supply, so get some floor space ready. Will most definitely be checking out a Diezel Herbie pedal in the near future!
This thing is awesome!!

Tried this on several amps as preamp into power amp and as distortion into front of amp. Wow does it kick a@@. For example: Into the front of an EVH 5150 III 50W clean channel. did a comparison to the evh channel 3. Could not beat this pedal with the amps distortion. i found that it was much deeper and wider tone. Side by side the evh channel 3 sounded brittle and fizzy in comparison. Great distortion pedal for heavy chugging and riffing and even for screaming leads.
