I've been playing flatwounds on my Jazzmaster for a little over a year. I usually use strings made by the other string company that starts with a 'D' but I've used other DR strings with success and these were a little cheaper, so I decided to give them a try. I knew immediately after installing that I wanted to remove them as soon as possible. These strings are not as smooth as the ones I normally use. They felt gritty, like they weren't polished. Also, there was a ridge on the edge of the wraps, almost as if the windings were overlapped. This was the biggest issue I had, as it created string noise that I don't experience with other flatwounds. Ultimately, I had these on my guitar for less than two weeks and won't be buying them again.

I was experiencing string squeak and a fellow musician suggested flatwound strings. I chose this brand to try. They have perform well. Just ordered another set.

I have used DR Legend strings for a number of years now on my electric guitars and have had no problems with them. They have a warm sound that I like for jazz and blues as well as the old style rock and no squeeks when I run the neck. If you prefer a twangier sound then they aren't for you. They also last longer then a round wound.

  • A good compromise.

There shouldn't be any controversy about whether or not flatwound strings are less bright than roundwounds. Quite simply, they're not. You have to weigh this against the fact that the smooth profile eliminates string squeak, reduces fret wear and increases string life. If you're playing jazz, brightness is generally not important. If you're playing Country these are probably not for you. Everything in between is discretionary. I've read reviews that claim this brand is gritty compared to others. Perhaps the grit was on their fingers as I found them as smooth as the D'Addarios I've used.
