D'Addario

collapse expand iconDescription

D'Addario's ECB81M Chromes Flat Wound Electric Bass Strings feature stainless steel ribbon wire wound onto a high carbon steel core to produce a tone renowned for its warmth and richness. The Chrome's polished stainless steel wrap wire glides effortlessly over frets for a silky smooth feel and minimal finger noise. Whether you play jazz, R&B, pop or any genre calling for a thick, punchy low end, the ECB81M Chromes Bass Strings are engineered to please.

Flat Wound Construction Provides Distinctive Tone

The ECB81M Chromes' stainless steel ribbon wire is flattened then precision wound onto the string's high carbon steel cores. This flat wound construction produces the string's signature mellow, vintage-inspired tone with pronounced bottom end and midrange. The Chrome's tone blends beautifully into any mix, cutting through while also providing a solid foundation for the bass line.

Polished Wrap Wire Enables Smooth Playability

After winding, the ECB81M Chromes' stainless steel wrap wire is polished to a mirror-smooth finish. This polished surface enables the strings to glide effortlessly over frets with minimal friction for a slick, buttery feel. The polished wrap wire also helps reduce finger noise, allowing bassists to move freely across the fretboard without unwanted string squeak.

Light Medium Gauge Offers Even Tension and Punchy Lows

The ECB81M Chromes feature a light medium 40-100 gauge range that provides relatively even tension and a punchy low end. The lighter 40 gauge E string makes higher register playing comfortable while the heavier 100 gauge B string delivers a tight, robust low end. This gauge range suits the needs of most bassists seeking thick, prominent lows and a vintage flat wound tone.

Made to Exact Standards for Consistent Quality

Like all D'Addario products, the ECB81M Chromes Bass Strings are made to the most exacting standards to ensure consistent quality and performance. Built in the USA by D'Addario, the world's largest string manufacturer, the ECB81M Chromes provide the quality and reliability that today's bassists demand.

GOOD GRAVY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a Squier Vintage Jazz Bass, and although it's an awesome instrument (probably one of the best I've ever played, even better than some American Fenders), it was still missing something that I have tried to figure out for 5 months, and have tried to find by changing settings, lowering the bridge saddles, everything. These strings are what I've been missing. They provide me with the cleanliness, depth, and percussiveness that you find with the best funk/jazz sounds, and the flat out rattley punch that one hears in prog rock. (RUSH RULES!!) I didn't expect such an incredible sound (not just mellowness or smoothness added to my bass, but an absolutely perfect redefinition of the prog sound I've worked so hard to create) to come from a set of flatwounds! Now, I'm never using anything else!

A bad experience

Even though the package says 'Medium scale' (my bass is medium scale, 35" from bridge - nut,) the strings were too short. They absolutely did not fit. I contacted Guitar Center to see about a credit or exchange and the associate said that string purchases are usually 'perishable,' so nothing he could do; if you try and string them they won't be in original condition. Unfortunately a bad experience for me and stuck with strings I can't use. Flat wound strings are hard to get, they have to be ordered because stores, including Guitar Center, never carry them; so what's the answer? Order several sets to find the right one and be stuck with the sets you can't use? Doesn't seem reasonable. Not happy.

I put these on my vintage Ibanez P bass. Law suit era. These strings are perfect for any P. They have that classic fat round sound.

  • Great on my short scale Violin style.

Love them on my Rogue VB-100. Previous owner has round-wounds on it. This gives it that deeper tone while also making it easier to play. Sliding is much easier with these.

  • Nice & Smooth

Been using D'Addario strings on all of my instruments for some years now and have never been disappointed. Really good value and really great tone. I have also used Ernie Ball flat wounds, but I feel the tone is warmer with these. Two thumbs up!

  • Made for a smaller sized bass like a 30.5 scale length

Don't accidentally click on and order the wrong scale length bass strings. MF won't let you return or exchange an UNOPENED set of strings.

  • I would and will buy these strings again
