How to choose the best mic for your vocal performance

Roger Daltrey SM58 Interview | Shure

Description
Let's be clear—the Shure SM58 isn't just another microphone; it is unequivocally the best vocal microphone ever created. For decades, it has stood as the absolute benchmark, the gold standard against which all others are judged. This dynamic microphone is the most trusted tool for musicians, vocalists, engineers and live sound professionals worldwide. Its presence on countless stages and in legendary studio sessions isn't coincidence—it's proof of its unrivaled performance, bulletproof construction and the iconic sound that has defined amplified voice for generations.
Iconic Cardioid Microphone for Flawless Live Performance
The SM58's legendary status starts with its cardioid microphone pickup pattern. This isn't just a technical specification; it's the magic that delivers unparalleled focus on your voice. It masterfully isolates the vocalist, pushing your sound forward while aggressively rejecting unwanted stage noise and feedback. For any live performance microphone scenario, especially on loud stages, the SM58 ensures your vocals cut through with power and pristine clarity, making it the definitive choice for performers who demand to be heard perfectly.
Dynamic Microphone Clarity With Superior Pop Filter
Housed within that instantly recognizable grille is a highly effective spherical wind and pop filter. This integrated feature is crucial for achieving that smooth, professional vocal sound straight out of the box. It expertly minimizes plosive sounds ('P's and 'B's) and breath noise without compromising the SM58's renowned vocal warmth and presence. This attention to detail contributes significantly to its reputation as the best vocal mic for achieving polished results effortlessly, whether live or recording.
The Most Durable Microphone—Built for Stage and Studio Abuse
Talk to any touring professional, and they'll tell you about the SM58's legendary toughness. This is arguably the most durable microphone ever built. Its rugged metal construction, reinforced steel mesh grille and proven internal shockmount system mean it can withstand drops, impacts and the relentless grind of touring that would silence lesser mics. It's not just road-ready; it's practically indestructible, making it the ultimate reliable stage mic and a dependable workhorse in any environment.
The Industry Standard Mic Trusted for Generations
The Shure SM58 is more than just equipment; it's the industry standard mic for vocals, period. Its legacy is built on decades of unwavering trust from the biggest names in music and the hardest working performers everywhere. Combining its tailored frequency response, unmatched durability and flawless sound capture, the SM58 remains the ultimate vocal microphone. It's not just a purchase; it's an investment in legendary performance and reliability that has defined professional sound for decades.

A must have mic for live use
This is a must have mic for any active musician. This mic is excellent for stage use, but it is also very useful in a studio or project studio. This mic has been my main stage mic for over 15 years. The SM58 is known to be great for live use but it is also great to use on vocal recordings. The SM58 is also a great mic to use on a snare drum (especially since it is durable). The SM58 is built tough enough to stand up against years of abuse. If you play live you need to have this mic.

Not sure if I would buy again.
I have several old Shure mics that I've owned for almost 20 years. They have never let me down. Needed an extra mic so bought the SM58. It worked well for about 1 year then quit. The mic was never gigged, never dropped, just used in home studio. Very gun shy of this mic now but while it worked it was great. I just bought the cheaper SM48 hoping to have better luck. SM58 Mic doesn't seem durable.

Is there a relatively inexpensive speaker or amp to plug this into? I currently have an amp and a speaker, neither of which accept an XLR cable (nor an XLR to stereo adapter).
You want an XLR to mono adaptor. Take a look at the "Hosa MIT435 XLR Female LO-Z to 1/4" TS Male HI-Z Microphone Input Impedance Transformer"submitted5 years ago
