It's certainly playable, reasonably priced (I bought a used instrument). Highest notes sound thin and weak in comparison to lower notes.

I wanted a reasonably-priced concertina to see if I could learn to play one. The Hohner D40 seems reasonably well built and easy to "squeeze." The buttons work well, and the quality is adequate as far as I can tell. The sounds produced are excellent. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is trying to learn without breaking the bank.

brand new - after 3 days the G/A button got stuck so it would play the chord w/o depressing the key. GuitarCenter, which was great, sent another one. Again, brand new, same button stuck. There is a problem w/Horner's manufacturing that 2 concertinas would have the same button stuck after only 2 or 3 days playing. makes me think these instruments were made in China

This is not a collector's item - just a decent, basic, not-too-expensive instrument to learn on. Thank you Hohner for keeping it in production. I was impressed by three things: 1. The basic instrument is new to me, and the one I received by mail worked just fine out of the box. 2. The 20-button model is fine for most of the Irish/sea chanty music I am interested in right now. If I start really using the concertina a lot/getting better, I can always upgrade to a better instrument, but this one really is fine for now. Nice gig bag comes with it, too. 3. The customer service was also good - even though I ordered online, and did not work through a live saleman at my local store, I was pleased to receive a quick and personal response to a question I had about a sticking key (resolved easily). I only wish the on-line instructional material was a bit more plentiful.

I was eager to get this concertina, but found that I quickly outgrew it. Because it's only a twenty button piece and in C, a lot of songs are hard to play. The bellows don't expand very far either, so air control is an issue. It's excellent for anyone starting in music, but if you want to take something around and play a wide variety of songs, this isn't for you. Also a little disappointed with it's ability, considering the price- pretty expensive for a beginner's organ.
