Hofner
Description

The Hofner Vintage '62 Violin electric bass guitar is inspired by Paul McCartney's 1963 Hofner Violin Bass. This hollowbody bass provides the unmistakable tone and playability that defined an era. Its slim neck and fully hollow body deliver ringing sustain and woody punch.

Iconic Hollowbody Design

The Hofner Vintage '62 Violin Bass features the violin-shaped hollow body that Hofner introduced in 1956 and made famous. Its hollow construction provides a warm, resonant tone with articulate lows, open mids and singing highs. The bass's 30" scale length offers tight, focused bass tones.

Slim, Fast Neck

This Hofner bass has a slim neck profile with a shallow D shape that fits comfortably in your hand. Its rosewood fingerboard has a fast, 12" radius and 22 medium frets that provide buttery playability for articulate runs and solos.

Vintage-Accurate Parts

From its vintage-style control knobs to its rosewood bridge, the Hofner Vintage '62 Violin Bass is built with parts modeled after 1960s components. It has two Hofner Staple-top pickups that deliver a wide range of classic tones from deep and dubby to bright and punchy. Volume and tone controls for each pickup let you craft your ideal sound.

Recently got a 2016 Hofner 500/1 `62 here on Guitar Center's used gear for an excellent price. First time I've had a German Hofner bass, I had a few of the lower priced Cheap Hofner, Epiphone, and Rogue violin basses. My 1st violin bass was in 1960 which was a Conrad violin bass. But this being a much better made and original Hofner German made is just great. Neck very straight and with LaBella flat strings, it produces a great tone.

Bass does not have fret dots on top of the neck. I needed the dots so I purchased tiny rub-on dots from a fret dot company on line. They work fine. Bass comes with a case and vintage guitar strap. I felt the metal parts at one end of the strap was going to scratch the wood, so I removed them, cut a hole at the end of the leather strap and attached it to bottom strap knob. I play in a Klezmer Music band in Florida.

  • A unique instrument!

The Hofner 500/1 '62 reissue is a great example of traditional German engineering in the modern world. While Hofner has updated some models (like the Contemporary version) the '62 model is made just like they used to way back when. I used to own a 60s vintage model and this modern bass holds it's own. The neck is much stronger and wider than the original model. Factory fitted with Hofner/Pyramid strings this baby nails those full bodied tones only a hollow body bass can make. The 30" scale is very comfortable even after playing a standard 34" scale Fender for many years. Hofner only builds up to 1000 of these models yearly, so I was very lucky to get a new model. Expensive? Yes...but if you're looking for the "real thing" it's the only way to go. Hofner's full tone fits into a lot more music than just vintage British rock...my advice is to experiment with it and find it's true voice that is very versatile. My only complaint is that there are no side dot markers on the neck. Another surprise is it's accurate intonation...I was truly shocked how "in tune" the bass is through out the octaves, great work!

owning the Hofner is a dream come true, especially the Vintage 1962. I also have an an Ignition, Union Jack, which I purchased last year. I use the Ignition when I go to my lessons and if we are playing outside. My Vintage 1962 I also use practicing at home or when I play inside or with the church group.
