Description

The Fender Yngwie Malmsteen Stratocaster is a revolutionary instrument, handcrafted specifically for the renowned virtuoso guitarist. Featuring custom pickups voiced to Yngwie's exacting specifications, stainless steel frets, and a compound radius maple neck for fluid playability, this signature Stratocaster provides the tone and performance demanded by one of rock's most influential shredders. Now available at Guitar Center, the Yngwie Malmsteen Stratocaster lets players of all levels emulate the speed, accuracy and tone of the master himself.

Custom YJM Fury Pickups Provide Iconic Tone

Designed by Seymour Duncan, the three YJM Fury single-coil pickups are voiced to capture Yngwie's signature tone: clear, articulate and perfectly balanced for high-speed playing. Roll back the volume control for a classic clean sound or crank the amp for screaming overdriven leads. A five-way switch provides access to neck, neck/middle, middle, middle/bridge and bridge pickup combinations for a full range of tones from warm and mellow to bright and cutting.

Maple Neck and Scalloped Fretboard Enable Flawless Playability

The Yngwie Malmsteen Stratocaster features a modern C-shaped maple neck for stability and sustain. A compound radius fretboard has a gradual curve, flattening out towards the higher frets for comfortable chording and effortless bends. 21 stainless steel frets have been precision-scalloped for reduced friction and enhanced feel. The result is a neck that plays fast and feels utterly seamless.

Iconic Style and Specs

With an alder body, large headstock and three-ply pickguard, the Yngwie Malmsteen Stratocaster has a distinctive vintage-inspired style. It features an American vintage synchronized tremolo bridge, chrome hardware, and aged plastic parts for an authentically worn-in look. Other premium specs include a brass nut, bullet truss rod nut and machine screw neck mounting for optimal tone transference and stability. A deluxe Tweed case is included, allowing you to transport and protect this iconic ax in style.

Best Strat Period

I own two of these and consider myself blessed by God to have them. In my opinion there is not a better guitar for playing blues out there. I am 44 years old and have been playing since I was 15. I have never played a guitar that has given me such control and power over bends and vibrato. This is why Yngwie plays the scalloped neck. The Scallops will not make you play faster or slower. I use Fender Super Bullet 10 gauge strings. Yngwie used 10's back in his early days as well. I have both a Sonic blue/maple and a Candy Apple red/rosewood. The red/rosewood does not have the world's tightest neck pocket, but it still is a top notch guitar. This one also has deeper scallops than the blue/maple one. These guitars can do anything you would expect a great strat to do, and do it better than others. The pick ups are low output and preserve the clarity of the original signal. They are hum canceling and have the best srat tones that I have ever heard. You will need to use an overdrive pedal like Yngwie's DOD YJM 308 or an Ibanez TS9 to boost the siganal if you you really want to rock. I play at my church which is a Calvary Chapel in the San Diego area. The music we play ranges from hymns to rock that borders on heavy metal at times. My two Malmsteens are the only electric guitars that I use, or want to use. I often thank Jesus Christ for blessing me with these guitars. I plan to use both of them to worship Him for the rest of my life. The Malmsteens are built like a tank and stay in tune. They are by no means cheap, but they are worth every penny.

NITRO finish makes it unplayable (great guitar otherwise!)

Professional guitarist here with 20+ years of experience and a pretty extensive guitar arsenal. Good solid guitar for the price, really, and lots of fun to play. Stunning looks too. It's medium-weighted and resonant enough. The best take on the YJM model so far, in my opinion. The setup right off the box was outstanding: truss-rod, tremolo action and string action was perfect. Very surprised. Good neck-fit also, tight in the heel with not too much clearance (although I've seen others that presented gaps beyond acceptance, mostly due to crooked necks that needed to be reset). My only negative concern it's a remarkable issue tho: the Nitrocellulose finish on the neck couldn't be worse. Good thing for TONE, yes. But it makes the guitar unplayable when it warms up. I can't believe Fender can't get this right or figured out. Looks like the nitro coat is uncured or cured in a very rushed way, so after 20 minutes of intense playing the neck get sticky to a level that really impairs playability. Give your neck a couple of coats of HONEY and let it dry for a similar experience and feel. I simply cannot play the guitar the way is delivered, so I had to options: return it and get over it or sand the back of the neck down to bare wood (which I wasn't crazy about). I like the guitar so much that I ended up doing the last option. At least now it's playable and it gained me access to lots of joy. Good people of Fender, if you're reading: good for upgrading this model up to Nitro, but if you're gonna do it... please do it RIGHT. -I would give the guitar 5 stars otherwise. Anything else is great about it.

I don't understand why Fender insists on making guitars with wide nut spacing on thin necks with wide bridge spacing. As others have mentioned many times over the years with this and other models, out of the box this guitar is nearly unplayable as the E's will slip off the board. At frets 1-4, the E's come straight down on the bevel of the frets. It's not technique. It's the spec. Fender over bevels the frets on a 42mm nut space with wide string spacing and the wider spacing at the bridge. It's like they want you to return this guitar. Same issue with my '61 custom shop that I had to replace the nut on to a narrower spacing and level the frets down to give more room on the frets and remove some of that bevel. I'm done giving Fender thousands of dollars only to have to spend more to make their guitars playable. Fender says it's the artist spec and there is nothing wrong with it. That may be true, but look at all the reviews out there, this is a common issue for a long time. Many will claim it's my technique the guitar is perfect... Ok, go see for yourself, my picture doesn't lie and you've been warned.

The scalloped frets make this guitar effortless to play. It took about 10 minutes to get used to and then you can fly across the neck with an extra light touch and sound great. The pickups sound great for almost any genre. You don't have to be a Yngwie fan to love this guitar. It will take you to a whole new level of playing. I LOVE it!

Spent nearly $2,000 and received poorly set-up instrument. The high e-string is nearly unplayable due to improperly alignment/spacing from nut to saddles. Taking to a professional luthier. Otherwise, a beautiful instrument, and exactly as I anticipated.

  • I would recommend this product.

I was amazed that the string spacing from the factory made the guitar unusable. I called Fender Customer Support and they told me it was built to the Artist's specs and not Defective.
