Great Sounding Amp - for clarity, warmth and punch!

The Princeton Reverb by Fender is a superb amp for a variety of applications, but is especially desirable for a really clean sound (e.g., classic surf music, country and jazz). The amp can also rock and produce amazing slightly overdriven sounds heard on many classic rock songs. I bought this amp mainly to use with a Gibson ES 175 for Jazz (light strumming, finger style and piano-style/plucking chord voicing). I was using a Polytone Minibrute that just wasn't clean enough. Most of the amps I played were simply not clean enough (i.e., able to preserve the clarity of subtle but important tones going from Dom9 to Dom7(-9) in lower positions at higher volumes). I've been playing for years and I had very high expectations for this amp...and I'm happy to say the Princeton meets all of them. I knew I wanted a smaller Fender 65 Reissue style tube amp. I needed it to sound clean, warm, punchy and be portable. I also wanted to use the amp for classic rock by turning the amp up loud to break-up (get a bit dirty)...however, I did not want my ears to bleed when I reached this volume. So I was torn b/w getting the Princeton vs. Deluxe model. The Princeton turned out to be perfect and I have no regrets! The amp sounds great in my home, its very clean (even at high volumes) and it is plenty loud enough for large rooms. The larger models (Twin or Deluxe) would be way too loud for me by the time the amp started to break. The Deluxe is just heavy enough to make me reluctant to take it anywhere or everywhere. The Princeton is very easy to move. I am 50 and have some hearing loss and a bad back, so getting just the right sound without losing any more hearing was very important. My ears and back got exactly what was needed without any loss of sound quality or other trade-offs! If you looking for warm clean punchy sound with chiming highs when you need it - this is THE amp. Fender Reverb and tremolo are too intense past 3 or 4, but sound great at < 3!

Disappointed

I purchased this amp with high hopes relying on Fender's reputation and user reviews. Upon arriving I opened the box and could tell that someone had previously returned this. Not a good sign. After unwrapping the amp I noticed right away that the chassis was pushed back into the amp about 1/4 to 1/2 inches. This caused the grill cloth/speaker baffle to protrude. I tried loosening the top cabinet screws to push the chassis back into place. But as soon as I tightened them the chassis would go back to the same place. What a shame this left the factory like this and shame on Guitar Center for not looking over the amp upon return. I paid for a new amp not a b-stock. I could have exchanged it for another one but was so disgusted that I asked for my money back. The vibrato also clicked liked an old alarm clock. This certainly does not encourage me to buy from Fender or Guitar Center.

    If you are looking for a versatile amp that has beautiful cleans and great tube break up at higher volumes, this is it! Great pedal platform and so easy to dial in some seriously great tones across a broad spectrum of genres and the reverb and tremolo are outstanding. Very happy!

    I use this exclusively in my home studio but it's only played through a ToneKing Mini II attenuator. This allows the amp to be played at tube breakup levels without being too loud. It's fantastic for pedals and the reverb is lush. The last pedal on my board is my Line 6 Echo Park where I split my guitar signal in two and the Princeton is plugged into the "A" out channel and the "B" out channel to a 2 watt amp. Together these two amps sound sweeeet. Plus, you can choose ping pong for a very full sound. I tried a 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb, a 65 Tweed Princeton with a 12" Celestion and a Dr Z Cure but all three were very disappointing compared to the great sound of the Princeton.

    I've owned every Fender vintage reissue amp, every amp from the hot rod series, real vintage Twin Reverbs and Pro Reverbs etc. Ladies and gents, in my experience this is as good as it gets. At least if you're looking for Fender cleans with verb/trem that takes pedals like a champ. This thing records amazing, handles smaller gigs like a pro (and miked up larger ones too), and is also the world's greatest practice amp. Get a good tele, put all the knobs at noon, plug in and you'll swear you've died and gone to heaven. It's truly a spiritual experience playing this amp in its sweet spot. Is it expensive for a low wattage small amp with a 10" speaker? Of course! Is it worth it? no question. In fact it might just end your amp journey.
