Behringer
Description
The MINIFBQ FBQ800 features Behringer's FBQ Feedback Detection System that instantly reveals critical frequencies and can also be used as an audio analyzer. An additional low cut filter removes unwanted frequencies such as floor rumble. Accurate 6-digit LED input/output meters and level control are provided for precise level indication. Long-term reliability is guaranteed with Behringer's high-quality illuminated faders, potentiometer and illuminated switches. The ultralow noise audio operational amplifiers offer outstanding sound performance. In addition, all Mini Series models can be stacked on top of each other to create an ultra-compact signal processing solution.

How Does it Work?
Imagine the frequency range of the sound you hear as a highway, a very wide one with nine lanes. Each of these “lanes” represents a single octave of the sonic spectrum. The first four lanes, labeled 63 - 500 (Hz) contain the really low frequency sound content, mainly bass, bass vocals, and the kick and tom drums. The three lanes labeled 1k, 2k and 4k (Hz), make up the fundamental zone of most musical instruments and the male and female vocals. 8k and 16k cover the frequency range of cymbals, snare drums and higher pitched percussion instruments. The FBQ800 allows you to control the flow of audio traffic in each of these nine lanes. When properly applied, EQ makes it possible to hear all of these frequency ranges equally, thus the term equalization.

Feedback Elimination
When a specific frequency, or range of frequencies, reaches too high a level, feedback occurs—that all-too-familiar squeal or howl you get when the mic is too close to the speaker. Basically, feedback happens when there is so much of a particular frequency that it is picked up by the mic and run through the system again. That’s why feedback typically gets louder and louder the longer it’s allowed to occur. Needless to say, this kind of feedback is very undesirable.

This is where the FBQ800’s Feedback Detection System really works its magic. In this ingenious circuitry, LEDs on the individual faders light up when that frequency band is approaching the danger zone. All you need do is lower the illuminated slider until the LED blinks out—voilà, feedback problem solved! What once required a highly trained ear is now an activity that even a child can master.

Sonic Toolkit…
That really is the best way to describe the FBQ800. With its nine frequency bands, you easily fine-tune your sound and instantly eliminate feedback. And each fader can be used to boost or cut the frequency range it controls by as much as 12 dB (and that’s a lot!).

Special attention is paid to the low frequency zone. In addition to low frequency faders, the FBQ800 features a Low Cut filter for removing unwanted low frequencies such as floor rumble, room resonance, electrical hum, etc. This is especially handy if your system is being used for speech rather than music.

To Boost or to Cut, That is the Question
Raising and lowering specific frequency bands can improve the frequency response of any room’s acoustics. For instance, if the room you’re in is “bass-heavy,” lowering the 63 and 125Hz faders can help eliminate an overall “boomy” or “muddy” sound. Likewise, gently boosting the 8 and 16k sliders can add sparkle to a somewhat “dark” mix. Are the vocals getting lost in the mix? Raising the level of the 1k slider can help bring them out.

It’s important to note that raising a single fader level is not always the best solution; it’s often better to lower the bands surrounding the frequency you want to bring out, and then boost the overall volume level to achieve better headroom.

Built for Accuracy and Reliability
Speaking of headroom, FBQ800’s 6-digit LED I/O meters and level control are provided for precise level maintenance. Long-term reliability is ensured, thanks to high-quality illuminated faders and switches, and our ultra low-noise audio operational amplifiers provide outstanding sonic performance. In addition, all Mini Series components can be stacked to create an ultra-compact signal processing solution.

very easy to use

My friend had one of these along with a behringer karaoke machine, and believe me, this eq does a great job of adjusting the sound. It's nine bands are very sufficient for an average user, and its level indicators are also very nice. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to improve their sound.

noisy! noisy! noisy!... other problems too

I should have known better than to take another chance on a Behringer product. I thought this was exactly what I was looking for in terms of having a compact EQ for my live vocal system. Well, after getting it hooked up, there was a nasty hiss in the line. I took it out and the hiss was gone. When I bypassed the EQ on the box, the hiss would lessen, but not go away. The level meter on the front doesn't work either. It's supposed to measure input or output level depending on one of the push-button settings, but it wouldn't light up at all. Then there's the Feedback Analyzer function which is supposed to illuminate the EQ sliders based on what frequencies can cause feedback. I turned on the function and forced the mic to feedback and got nothing on the sliders. Behringer products have always been hit or miss in quality... this one is definitely a miss. I want my money back!!!

I am using the Behringer FBQ800 to breathe critically needed audio life and range into the otherwise low-mid-muddy and bass-heavy Polk Audio DSB1 Sound Bar ... which only has plus/minus bass adjustment [yes, you read that right -- bass only]. That obvious aural limitation made for a practically unbearable listening experience ... especially when it came to understanding TV audio dialogue [which is the vast majority of what television viewing is, anyway]. To evoke an oft-used simile, "it was like listening through a fish aquarium." The faders on the FBQ800 are smooth enough for a set-it-and-forget it frequency sweep, and it is doing a superb job of sending the right balance of accentuated high mids and treble to the the previously malnourished DSB1 upper-range drivers. Also offering an additional dose of badly-needed mud abatement is the the 75 Hz bass rolloff switch, which will permanently remain in the "on position" while in use. I am not using any of the "feedback control" functionality at this time. In summation, if you have a Polk Audio DSB1 and are trying to understand television "spoken word" with it in service, you are going to need some form of clean high-mid and treble boost to make it that possible. Without the Behringer FBQ800, my "Sound Bar" was little more than a quicksand bog of boomy bass and inarticulate lisping. Now, I can tell the difference between "c" & "z", "ch" & "sh" sounds and all the other fricatives, determine the fact that something had been pluralized with the addition of the "s" sound placed at the back of a word ... and also enjoy the satisfying attack of a well-spoken "closing hard k" at the end as well. Even though the FBQ800 is a stereo unit, there is only one set of faders to control all the EQ bands for both the left and right channels, simultaneously. For the sake of expediency and simplicity, that's completely all right with me. It is a nice little wall-wart-powered graphic EQ that does its job, period.

I play left hand bass and keys in a bar band, and run my Korg keyboard through a separate system (Alto small mixer and powered 12's). With just the Hi, Mid, and Lo EQ I could not get the right sound and did not want to bring my 15 band EQ system. So I figured I would try this little guy. WOW,, I now can dial in my bass sound and my top (piano, organ) evenly. No hiss, even when it is cranked up with no sound. Also it sized perfect so it sits right on my keyboard, without getting in the way, so I can make changes on the fly if needed.

Our band plays bars and small clubs. In close quarters our monitors would feed back. By adding this simple EQ to our monitor mix it eliminated this issue first time out. Feed back detection and elimination of floor rumble really great. Nice to hear ourselves for a change. Great bang for the buck
