Overview

The Behringer CS400 COMPRESSOR/SUSTAINER CS400 effects pedal is an affordable way to add some serious finesse to your playing. Dynamics play an important role in music. They help to convey emotion, whether it's a sultry blues solo or the unrelenting gallop of unfettered metal. But uncontrolled dynamics can take all your best intentions and turn them into mush. That's where the Behringer CS400 comes in, softening loud sounds and boosting low signal levels to keep everything more uniform.

Ever notice how some strings on your guitar or bass sound louder than others? This is partly due to physics. Strings with lower mass just don't put out as much volume as the heavier ones. When used properly, a compressor makes all of the strings the same volume. Compressors are also great for slap-style bass players, making thumb slaps, string pulls and muted notes all the same volume, for an extremely percussive effect.

The CS400 COMPRESSOR/SUSTAINER is easy to use. You can dial in the right amount of compression using the dedicated Attack and Sustain dials. The Level control allows you to set the output to subtle, or engage a monster volume boost. Tone lets you add exactly the right level of highs. From clean, snappy country leads to rock solos that scream for eons, the CS400 is built to make your sound the center of attention. Its LED tells you when it's on, and the top-quality on/off switch maintains outstanding signal integrity in bypass mode. You can power this scene-stealer with either a 9 V battery or our PSU-SB DC power supply (not included).

Features

  • Compress loud and boost low signals without degrading the original sound
  • Dedicated Level, Tone, Attack and Sustain controls
  • Blue status LED
  • First-class electronic On/Off switch for highest signal integrity in bypass mode
  • Rugged construction ensures long life

I have been playing electric guitar for over a year. My set up is somewhat inexpensive: A Fender Blues Jr, Epiphone Les Paul Standard with the stock Humbuckers. I like the tone of the Fender Blues Jr. but never felt like I was getting a quality sound between the Epiphone and Blues Jr. I actually considered changing pickups in hopes of a better sound but from my research it just didn't feel like the right thing to do. So this is coming from someone new to pedals. I started researching pedals to enhance my sound and found that the prices were anywhere from $50-$150. Then I came across these economical Berhinger pedals and read many reviews. Not sure I wanted to spend $150 for one pedal when I can get two for $50 bucks. There were a few negative reviews but the positive outweighed the negative reviews by far, so I decided to pull the trigger on the CS400 and TS0800. I've only played with the CS400 for about three hours and I can tell you that my sound has improved 100 times, it was everything I was looking for. It has a really sweet sustain and its mellowed out the highs on all 6 strings. I started it out on full sustain but it was just to much so I backed it off to about 50/75%. The plastic housing is pretty thick plastic, not a 100% hard plastic but has a little flexibility which is good. I am fairly easy on my equipment so I am not worried about the plastic housing. If you like to stomp on pedals, perhaps metal is better for you. The battery changeout is really the biggest pain, you have to depress two plastic pins, pull the foot switch off to put in the battery and then realign the foot switch with the spring when you put it back on. I can see where the plastic pins might be the one item that wears out, depending on how often you have to change the 9V. Solution to that is, get the power supply cord for 9.99. Overall, for my first pedal and having spent 19.99, I couldn't be happier. I have yet to test the TS0800, will review it later.

This pedal worked great for the first week that I got it. Afterwards, there was a distortion-like buzz just underneath the tone that wouldn't go away. There's obviously no gain knob on the pedal, so there was nothing I could do about it. Rolling back the sustain seemed to diminish the unwanted effect, but sustain is one of the main reasons I needed a compressor to begin with. I returned the pedal and got my money back. Don't know if I just got the ONE pedal off the line that didn't work, or if Behringer products are overall spotty.

After using a compressor pedal, I realized that I needed/wanted this more than I ever thought. Most guitarists wouldn't think to use one, but I assure you, at least try one out to see for yourself. Especially if you go from a lot of strumming to soloing and back. Unless, of coarse, you're into constantly moving your volume knob up and down to compensate for differences in volume and quality. Anyways, at this point I am more than willing to pony up the big bucks for a really good pedal. Wampler or Keeley would be great. At least a Boss would be reliable and decent quality...

SHOCKINGLY AWESOME PEDAL

By MARIO SULEY

from Pittsburgh,PA

Comments about Behringer CS400 Compressor/Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

The best compressor on the market. Heard some word from a few Pro Bassists that this was modeled after what I feel is the best Compressor/Sustainter ever made, the Boss CS-2, which is discontinued and goes for at the least, $150 used. But this little pedal packs so much punch. I have it hooked up to a Fender Jazz Bass, and an Ampeg combo, and I couldn't be more happy. It's very delicate though. I'd suggest buy the warranty for the extra $5. Dooooo it.

Comments about Behringer CS400 Compressor/Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I have been searching for a pedal to put some oomph into my new American Stratocaster. I own a Bugera 6260 witha Raven cabinet; very servicable for my needs btw just adding this so they know it is a tube amp and I don't own a pricey true Fender amp. I could great dirty cleans from the clean channel but the distortion crunch was a bit too much. I craved an overdriven sound and tried a clean boost which didn't really do it. I got this not expecting much but it was a huge gift from the heavens. I can just dial in sustain to around 2 o clock and tone to three and attack only to about 7 and blam I got perfect overdriven rock with perfect clarity and no need for even another pedal. It's the only thing I even need for my strat besides a noise reducer. So do yourself a favor and try this product and save a ton of money because it workd great!

Comments about Behringer CS400 Compressor/Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

My first Behringer pedal & I'm very happy with it. Definitely smoothes out the unwanted highs & lows - compressing and boosting the inconsistencies in your sound. Makes you sound better! Yes, there are more pricey pedals out there but for a simple, effective & budget friendly option, this pedal does the job. I would definitely replace it if something happens to it.

Comments about Behringer CS400 Compressor/Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've always loved Behringer for providing affordable equipment that barely falls short of the biggest names. Sure, other companies sound slightly better, but 2-5 times the price of barely better equipment isn't worth it to me (in most cases).

This compressor get's the job done, but it's not flawless. It is great for matching your arpeggios to your strums dynamically, while still somehow keeping your dynamic expressiveness. It's like it knows when you're trying to play quiet and loud vs trying to make one string match the volume of six. However, you tend to lose a bit of presence. My sound sometimes feels thin (which might be me not using it right). This biggest draw-back, however, is it has a little to much make-up gain. You have to turn the sustain nob really low, otherwise you will hear your tone getting louder as it sustains.

Yes, it is plastic. No, it does not come with a power-supply. No, it doesn't open easily. None of these things bother me. It is solid enough so long as you don't abuse it.
