If you are experimenting with different sounds and/or trying to play dubstep/electronica, this is the pedal for you! I use a guitar with it and it tracks very very well...I don't know exactly why other reviews claim this pedal has terrible tracking... because the only time it glitches is when you play 2 or more notes (which in the instructions it specifically says the pedal can only track one note at a time). It has trouble tracking higher frequencies...but there's cons for every stompbox. So as long as you play single note lines, it works awesomely! Now to really make this pedal sound awesome, I would suggest also getting an expression pedal (to control frequency sweeps and LFO wobbles) and also a compressor before the pedal (this helps tracking and to even-out the sound from the pedal). It has an enormous amount of low frequency bass sound, and if you bump up the low end by an equalizer, this pedal is magical. Definately read the instructions because it helps figuring out what all the knobs do, although right out of the box, the sounds are worth the pricey amount for this pedal. Definately worth it for the dubstep and electronica experimentalist or for the synth noodlist. Five Stars all the way.

The sounds are cool but they all sound way too much alike. You also won't find out until you open the box and have to read the manual that you CANNOT use the pedal with any other FX pedals and you have to EQ all the frequencies to flat, otherwise the pedal (which already is questionable with tracking notes), won't work properly at all. I got this with a gift card and I'm still going to return it because I'm that disappointed in this product. Boss dropped the ball on this one.

  • This is a GREAT pedal, so don't be so quick to judge!

Let's start by saying, I've played just about every synth bass pedal under the sun. The syb 5 is hands down the best one you can get without spending a rediculous amount of money on. The best thing to do is READ THE INSTUCTIONS!! like someone said in an above post. So take a moment to read and understand what the manual says. It will help you out greatly!

  • for the price not so bad tracking sucks

boss syb-5 for the price is a good pedal to emulate the sounds of dance, electronica, drum and bass, on your bass. it doesnt play chords but its not meant to cant complain. the tracking is pretty much for me the only thing that really hinders the pedal. id record and the problems very noticeable. for the price no bad tracking should be improved

  • don't go for it!

i recently bought this item thinking that it would be a cool addition to my sound, but i was very wrong. let me tell you all the cons that they don't mention in the description: 1) it seriously needs a sensitivity knob. when i played my bass through this thing, i had to hit the strings really hard for it to capture my sound. when i used a pick or i tapped, it simply didn't pick up my sound 2) about six of the modes sound very much sound the same ,a horrible thing if you want variety 3) there aren't much options to shape your sound since all the modes are pre-installed and you can merely adjust them a little bit 4) you can only hit one note at a time; you can't play any chords on this thing. it even says this on the manual

  • A little expensive, but still a good pedal.

I got this pedal the other day, and I love it! It has some cool features like the Hold Note feature. It has some cool sounds, too. You also have to get used to it at first. All in all a great pedal.

I play guitar and bass and I am deciding between getting the Boss SY1 Guitar Synth or the Boss SYB5 Bass Synth. I understand the former can be switched between guitar or bass. Does the bass synth have sounds not available on the Guitar Synth?
