...an additional note not mentioned for RC20 users.
I loved my RC20...but after many years and spilled beers it was time to upgrade, so I took a chance on the RC30 figuring, like the other reviewers it would be a major step up. I also find it to be a few steps forward, a few back. For anyone else in my predicament seeking a replacement for their RC20 but slightly paranoid about the additional functions of the RC30, it should be noted (and is on the last page of the manual) that by turning the unit on while holding down the LOOPFX button you can revert the pedal functions of the RC30 to the exact functions of the RC20. Bouncing patches from the RC20 is indeed tricky, however although burdensome once completed now it's something you can back up eliminating the fear I've had for years of a total failure. Also, the additional time and patches are...for someone who is used to the admittedly limited memory of the RC20...well, HUGE. ...they really could have spared us the stereo i/o and skipped the rhythm volume knob and instead routed it to the same line in as the RC20....that would have been a MAJOR plus.

Poor substitute for the Boss RC-20
I have been very happy with my RC-20 for many years. Unfortunately it started to fail so I picked up an RC-30 as a replacement. What a mistake. I returned it after a few hours. It is missing the basic functionality of the RC-20 that I love and use. It does not let you record a phrase, play it back with or without overdubs, then delete it and record again under pedal control. There is no pedal control delete function! And if you use the alternate track to record a second part, it doesn't let you playback just the new part. It insists on starting the first track 2 seconds later over the second track. Makes the RC-30 completely useless for live multi-tracking. I managed to hunt down an RC-20XL even though it looks like they are discontinued and will hopefully have that as an adequate replacement for my RC-20.

It's a good pedal - great looping and tons of memory. But unless you are seriously jazzed about the on-board effects, I'd recommend getting the less expensive combination of the RC-3 and the FS-6 foot pedal. The big problem w me is that you can't change memory locations on the RC-30 with a single foot tap, even with the extra foot pedal. The foot pedal controls the effects, and I really had no use for them. Switched to the RC-3 plus FS-6 combo and that DOES let you at least move the memory up with a single tap.

I use the drum machine to keep time on the tempo of the songs! The looper gives you the experience of playing with a band! I can set a track of rhythm and play lead over it.
