A great middle of the road priced recorder
I remember back when a good quality recorder would easily cost 3 times as much as this unit. Over the years I have used several Boss BR recording units and everyone has been a great value for the price. The BR900CD is no exception. This is a great compact recording unit. The unit is a 8 track recorder that uses CompactFlash cards which makes carrying the media a snap. The BR900CD has very usable effects (especially for the guitar). The drum patter generator is usable but I would not use them for a final mix. I found that using the drum generator to make a drum scratch track was a very useful feature. I also liked using the drum generator as a practice feature to help a guitarist develop better timing. The unit also has a mastering toolkit which is very usable. The BR900CD also can burn a CD of your mix when you are finished. With all of these features a person could have a small little studio in a box and achieve very good results. The BR900CD is simple to use (which is one of their key goals). With all of these points in mind a person could enter into the world of recording with this unit very easily without much hassle or breaking the bank. I highly recommend the BR900CD.

Not so Easy to Use
I bought the BOSS BR-900CD recording studio three years ago and it still sits unused. I would like to use it, but the manual is nearly impossible to understand and if you don't already know how to use it nothing happens. So, it is a project that gets set off to the side collecting dust until I have time to try again. Each trial ends in frustration. The problem is the initial set-up. I can't get it to record anything. The Demo tunes are all it will play. Someone should really offer a class or make a video showing how to set it up and use this equipment.

Recently purchased this and I'm going to be selling it soon. I only reccomend buying one of these if you do not own a computer and want to get into recording as cheaply as possible. Obviously, this is cheaper than purchasing a computer, audio interface, and software. But if you already have a computer, for less money you can just get an audio interface and you're done. They come with lite versions of the software, but if you're serious you will want to upgrade to the full version for a little more cash. There really is no comparision to recording on your computer versus these Boss units. In a nutshell, you can't see what you're doing. The little screen just doesn't do recording justice. It's great for recording a single track and calling it a day. Try editing, splicing, fading, panning, or any effect at specific points in a song and good luck "seeing" what you are doing and having it work. On the computer, you can "SEE" everything. In comparision, it's as if the curtains have been opened and you can see outside when all of your music tracks and effects are there on your computer screen. You can look at your tracks, edit specific points visibly and align multiple track on your monitor. I could do this all day. If this is all you know, then you will make these Boss units work for you. If you ever see computer based software in action, you'll never touch this again. It really is like trying to drive down the road looking through a peephole compared to seeing everything you're doing on a computer screen.

Great Beginner Recording Studio

What I love about this unit is that it is easy to use. I was able to write a song in a weekend from beginning to end using just my guitar and the built in mic and master a CD for my friends. I quickly ran into the need for more tracks however and was frustrated with the bouncing process. The first time I did something wrong and it erased one of my tracks and I had to record all over again. The user manual is adequate but not the best. The effects are fairly good if you take the time to tweak them. They are digitally clean. For what this is and the features it has I think it's a fantastic deal for the money.

I'll keep this short and simple... I've recorded in some great recording studios with recording equipment worth more than I could ever imagine spending. But the quality of recordings from my BR900CD are better than anything I have ever done before! Super cheap, super ease to use, and super high quality; this device is a MUST HAVE for anyone who wants their music to be heard.
I don't feel like I was ripped off.

Buy it and love it. Awesome machine. I don't have it down 100% and I have been at it over a month. I have been finding more and more helpful surprises. I hope that I don't have it mastered for another month. It is worth the money. If you want to put out a demo or add music for your myspace page then this is the machine to use.

Being an up and coming hip hop artist studio time can get real expensive, until I got the boss 900. Now i can edit my own tracks with ease and not worry about spending any cash for someone's studio. I can record a track at night, edit it, and have people hearing it the next morning.
