BBE

Description

Two Timer is a classic analog Bucket Brigade Delay with that warm, haunting reverb and tape-like echoes. Pure analog awesomeness is just half the picture, as Two Timer doubles your pleasure with two independent delay times selectable via the Time1/Time2 mode footswitch. This makes it possible to have one delay set up for a short slapback rhythm sound while another is set longer for solos.

That gradual degradation of sound quality that occurs with each subsequent repeat is a charming sound that is ingrained deeply into vintage rock, and the Two Timer is a faithful recreation of that sound.

Two Timer delivers the consistency and ruggedness that are the hallmark of BBE pedals, designed for guitarists whose gigs are as demanding as their ears. It features a beefy mil-spec circuit board with big, fat signal traces, 1% metal-film resistors and high-voltage poly caps, all backed up by a robust, true hardwire bypass.
When you want the finest vintage analog delay experience without the headaches, Two Timer is a great choice.

After writing my other review about 330 MS being unusable short for having a second, "longer" delay, I have found that there are 3 internal trimpots for making adjustments! On the PCB, the 2 trimpots right next to each other adjusts the max delay time (the one on the right/closest to the edge adjusts Time 1, and one on the left adjusts Time 2) - turning them up/clockwise increases the max delay time! If you turn the trimpots full CW, it will cause a metallic ringing sound, so you can't go that far. As an adjustment suggestion, set Time 1 & 2 on the front knobs to max, and adjust the trimpots back/CCW until the ringing goes away when you play. I have adjusted 2 of these, I was able to get the max delay time without ringing well past the 330 MS - maybe 500-600 MS, which I find to be very usable for a longer delay (I don't think you can get to 1000 MS as I previously said without it ringing). The 3rd trimpot appears to adjust the bias or is a gain trim - if you find that even after adjusting the Mix knob, the initial delay sound still distorts, or is just "too much", dial the 3rd trimpot back/CCW. This mellows out the delay and made all the difference for the getting the smooth, warm analog delay sound (the sweet spot on the ones I adjusted was right at the middle point of max/min travel of the pot). It looks like these are coming out of the factory not set to optimal. If you are willing to turn a few trimpots, I think this is the best sounding and most functional delay out today (as I said before, not too harsh like the carbon copy, and not too warm/unclear as the aquapus - the sound is just right for an analog delay).

The current production Two Timer has a max delay time of 330 ms. Let that sink in - the LONGEST delay setting is 1/3 of a second. Now, setting a short slap back still works inside of 330 ms. But what is the point of having a second, presumably longer delay time, that cannot be longer than 330 ms?! Here is the part that is so annoying - the old ones were not like this (I have an old one - I was buying a second for another rig). The old ones, the max delay time was much longer, maybe 1000 ms. Which made them super functional, and they sounded awesome. The tone was just right - not too dark (ex: the Aquapus gets too dark to my ears), and not too bright (ex: the Carbon Copy gets too bright/harsh to my ears). So to my subjective ears, the sound was perfect. To bad BBE had to change it (presumably to save cost of stringing more bucket brigades together). If they changed it back, and upped the price to what other analog delays are costing these days, I would buy it in a heart beat.

Website said the pedal was 'blemished'. There are no visible defects, but two of the knobs stick when they're turned. Also some kind of powder came out of them the first few times I turned them. If that's from a repair that means it's refurbished, not blemished. I feel misled, thanks GC

To be clear, I bought this pedal from a Mom & Pop and not GC, but felt a review was in order. Pros: - Fantastic artwork. The newer versions have a cartoon "two-timer" that really adds some flash to your board. - Relatively compact. This pedal is no taller and only slightly wider than your standard Boss. The input/output holes are smartly placed on the left and right sides. - Available for power plug-in. Don't worry about changing out batteries with this one. Plug in your daisy chain power supply and relax. Cons: - "Always-On" Time light. Yes, this pedal features two settings to alternate between, but what they don't tell you is that that indicator light will be on, even when your pedal isn't. - Little/No versatility. Even with Time, Repeat, and Mix knobs, this pedal's output varies only slightly. You will not enjoy this pedal if you like experimenting with different echoes, times, etc. - Don't go past 6-7 on any knob. Granted, this could be attributed to "user error", but going past 7 on any knob with either my Tele or Strat resulted in an unbearable squeal. Repeat knob in particular is very susceptible to overwhelming itself with echoes and giving way to a screech. Conclusion: Skip this pedal. Though not extremely expensive, your money should go to a more reliable, versatile delay. Even for an analog, this guy is a one-trick pony, and the trick sucks. I would recommend an MXR Carbon Copy if you're looking for a more trustworthy analog, or find a digital delay that can imitate an analog. The TC Flashback does this, and also offers a depth that this BBE can only dream about.
