I got this dulcimer to play some mountain music with. I really like playing this instrument. YES, it is a short scale dulcimer and YES you do need to do some set up work. The nut and saddle will need to be checked to see that they are set right but ALL instruments need to be set up. That is all part of the fun. NOT a huge issue. Once that is done its time to learn some basics and you will want to at least get the Apple Creek book and a gig bag with this instrument. There are a few different tunings you can use on a dulcimer and a lot you can do with this instrument. I am using D-A-D tuning right now. YES you can get a capo for a dulcimer and it would be good to have for jam sessions unless you want to play every song in the same key all night long. This is a fun instrument and a true American instrument from Appalachia. This is a fine example of a dulcimer but keep in mind it is a beginners instrument. You will want to get a full size dulcimer as soon as you get into playing a dulcimer. This is one of the easiest instruments to play and once you get hooked you will be a dulcimer addict. This is a good thing. you can find many you tube videos on dulcimers and even festivals dedicated to the dulcimer. Learn some of those old time traditional tunes and keep em alive. this is a great starting point for mountain music and try jamming with other players of acoustic instruments. Its fun.

Definitely a cheap version..melody string broke as I tuned it ..bass string has frayed section that I also had to replace ..upper frets do not properly reflect notes when lower frets are in tune.. basically wanted this to keep my fingering limbered up so will keep it for crude practice ..definitely not an instrument for quality playing..

Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:
The price is good, it came in prefect condition. It is quiet and hard to play along with other instruments, but this is great for practice. I have to tune it every day, but that's to be expected with almost all stringed instruments.

Exceeded expectations
Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:
Bought this as a present for my sister. She reported that appears a lot higher quality than she expected for the price. Comes with a rudimentary noter and pick.

Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:
Seems well made, and was a good purchase because I wanted to try the dulcimer without making a huge investment. If I stick with it I'll upgrade to an American made one. As I have small hands the shorter scale on this dulcimer is fine for me. The strings stay tuned, and it looks to be glued together solidly. Wish it came with strap buttons.

Well made, sounds good, great purchase.
Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:
Smaller size dulcimer than an hour-glass shape. Really fine workmanship. For the price this is unbeatable. The tone is not as rich as one made of walnut, or cherry, but I would buy it again.

Loads of fun and easy to play
Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:
Is this a "good" dulcimer? I don't know because I have no experience with any dulcimer but this one. Is it fun and easy to play? Absolutely!! With a simple book or video lesson, you'll be playing tunes on the first day. Even just noodling around is fun and sounds good.

Great fun. It's a lot more versatile than I thought it would be. Learn how to tune it (there are at least two common tunings) and start playin around!

Comments about Apple Creek Dulcimer:
I received this yesterday. I am impressed with the sound quality as well as the finish on the instrument. It could use some fret markers on the side of the neck as well as on the fretboard and post for a strap. Other than this it is a very nice instrument. I play, cello, guitar and bass. I tried the Seagull Dulcimer in the store and
find the Apple Creek to be a better dulcimer for about half the price. I would give it 5 stars if it had post for a straps and inlays in the fretboard. this would cost very little to do.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Nice entry dulcimer. Need to tune a lot, but plays nice. Only complaint is that it feels a little cheaply made.
