Season 2 of Inside the Noise brought together an eclectic collection of musicians, entrepreneurs, builders, executives, inventors and artists. Looking back on the conversations, Guitar Center CEO Gabe Dalporto sees a common thread running through many of the stories: creativity. Whether discussing music, business, technology or leadership, the guests repeatedly demonstrated how curiosity and unconventional thinking can unlock extraordinary outcomes.
Joined by Guitar Center’s Max Lauer-Bader, Dalporto revisits some of the season’s most memorable moments and the lessons that continue to resonate.
On Why Musicians Often Become Great Innovators
“One of the things that I picked up on going back to David Kalt and Jeff ‘Skunk’ Baxter and a few others we're going to talk about is just how musicians—the ability to improvise and be creative—create really non-linear thinkers. The ability to go from playing to product design to defense design to reactor design and put all those pieces together and make step-change growth in all these different areas, I think, is deeply ingrained in musicianship, improvisation and the mathematics behind music.”
On the Power of Conviction
“What I see with Thomas Tull is he's a musician, but he's also a business person. Everything he's done, he's brought step-change innovative thinking. He takes traditional businesses and radically changes them through a creative process. He also links that to conviction. Having the courage to pursue an idea that other people may not immediately understand is often what creates the breakthrough.”
Learning Through Humility and Curiosity
“The first hump was the first three months, knowing I knew very little and having to be humble and extremely curious and going out and talking to customers, talking to front-line associates, talking to vendors and learning about the company. I asked three questions: What are we great at? What do we do poorly and need to stop doing? And what should we do differently?”
Why Stories Matter As Much As the Gear
“There’s metal, there’s wood, but there are also stories. There’s emotion and passion within these instruments. When you pick up a vintage guitar, you almost feel the people who played it before. You can feel the stories. That’s part of what makes music so special.”
The Takeaway From Season 2
Reflecting on the breadth of guests featured throughout the season—from Phil McKnight and Jeff "Skunk” Baxter to Yvette Young, Adrian Young, Marty Schwartz, Trey Hensley and many others—Dalporto sees inspiration everywhere.
“It was an incredible group of people. All of them were totally inspiring. Their stories are worth hearing. If there are any episodes you missed, go back and watch them. Trust me—they’re all fantastic stories.”
