Waldorf

Description

Sound design enters a new frontier with the Waldorf Iridium Desktop MK2 polyphonic digital synthesizer, an advanced instrument built on the legendary Quantum and Iridium synthesis platform. A powerful new CPU board with expanded RAM and flash storage unlocks deeper sample libraries, more complex synthesis workflows and enhanced multi-layer performance. Three oscillators each offer six synthesis engines—including wavetable, waveform, granular particle sampling, resonator, kernels and the new Seeds synthesis—while dual stereo filters, a deep modulation matrix and five effects slots per layer provide immense creative control. Designed for modern producers, composers and experimental artists, the Iridium Desktop MK2 combines flagship synthesis technology, cutting-edge modulation tools and an intuitive touchscreen interface into a powerful instrument for both studio production and live performance.

Per-Note Parameter Locks Introduce a New Performance Dimension

Exclusive to the Waldorf Iridium Desktop MK2 is the groundbreaking Per-Note Parameter Locks system, developed in collaboration with electronic music pioneer Aphex Twin. This feature allows each of the synthesizer’s 128 notes to store up to 16 unique parameter variations, enabling individual notes within a chord or sequence to behave completely differently. Simply hold a note and adjust controls to create variations in oscillator type, synthesis mode, filter behavior or effects processing. These parameter locks are saved with each patch and can be edited through a dedicated interface page, opening new possibilities for expressive performance, evolving textures and generative composition techniques.

Seeds Synthesis and Expanded Oscillator Architecture

Expanding the Waldorf Iridium Desktop MK2’s sonic vocabulary is the new Seeds synthesis engine, adding a sixth synthesis method to each oscillator. Inspired by wavetable synthesis but far more dynamic, Seeds generates evolving timbral journeys using clusters of sub-oscillators known as “seeds.” These elements can be manipulated through ring modulation, frequency modulation, noise shaping and other complex signal interactions. Alongside the existing wavetable, waveform, particle/granular sampling, resonator and kernels engines, this architecture creates an enormous palette of sonic possibilities—from classic Waldorf wavetable textures to cinematic atmospheres and experimental sound design.

Expanded Memory and Advanced Multi-Timbral Layers

Increased memory capacity significantly expands the Waldorf Iridium Desktop MK2’s sound design capabilities. The synthesizer now supports up to four multi-timbral layers instead of two, allowing deeper splits, stacks and performance configurations. New multi-timbral playback modes such as round-robin and random-robin introduce evolving tonal variation across repeated notes or sequences. With more than 1,750 factory patches, space for up to 7,000 user patches and 6GB of onboard sample flash memory—including 2GB of factory content—the MK2 provides a massive foundation for producers building complex, layered soundscapes.

Deep Modulation, Filters and Performance Tools

Extensive modulation and signal-shaping tools sit at the core of the Waldorf Iridium Desktop MK2. Each voice features dual stereo filters with multiple modeling types—including Nave, Largo, PPG and Quantum filter models—alongside a digital “Former” stage offering comb filters, bit-crushing, drives and formant filtering. A powerful modulation system includes six envelopes, six LFOs, a morphable Komplex modulator and a 40-slot modulation matrix with fast assignment. The “Flavour” control, inspired by Waldorf’s Protein synthesizer, introduces subtle micro-variations in timing, pitch and timbre, adding natural movement and character to sounds.

Modern Performance Interface and Connectivity

Built for modern studio and performance environments, the Waldorf Iridium Desktop MK2 combines advanced synthesis with flexible connectivity and an intuitive interface. A bright 1024 × 600 touchscreen provides real-time visual feedback and access to XY performance controls, while a 4×4 RGB pad matrix supports triggering notes, scales and chords. Connectivity includes stereo inputs and outputs, MIDI DIN and USB, MIDI 2.0 support, analog clock I/O, four high-resolution CV inputs and expandable sample storage via microSD. Housed in a rugged metal chassis with optional rack mounting and VESA support, the Waldorf Iridium Desktop MK2 delivers flagship Waldorf synthesis power in a versatile, accessible format for modern creative workflows.
