Description

With their Grand Theater guitars, Taylor introduces a fresh category of acoustic guitar in terms of size, feel and sound. Another step forward in Taylor’s devotion to player-friendly guitar design, the solid-wood Grand Theater, like this 2021 GTe Urban Ash Grand Theater acoustic-electric guitar packs all the tone of a full-size, solid-wood instrument into a more compact, inviting form to give players the best of both worlds—the approachability and playing comfort of a smaller guitar that doesn't sacrifice the full-voiced tonal output discerning players crave. The result is a guitar that’s incredibly fun to play, with a distinctive sonic personality worthy of any pro player’s toolbox.

Body Shape
The enormous popularity of the GS Mini over the last decade informed the design of the Grand Theater. Rather than pursuing a better GS Mini, Taylor master luthier Andy Powers designed a new guitar entirely: different body and neck dimensions, with new bracing, made with solid wood. It preserves the playing comfort of a smaller guitar while also producing a fuller-sounding voice. And its compact form makes it ultra-responsive to a light touch. Between the unique body dimensions, scale length, nut width and bracing, it introduces not just a new body style, but a new guitar category in both feel and sound.

Tonewoods

First introduced on Taylor’s Builder’s Edition 324ce, urban ash is a tonewood Taylor has embraced both for its sustainability and tone. Responsibly sourced from Shamel ash trees in need of removal from municipal areas in Southern California, its tonal properties rival those of high-quality Honduran mahogany, serving up a pleasing midrange warmth.

Together with C-Class bracing and the compact dimensions of the body and neck, the spruce top is responsive to a light touch yet capable of impressive tonal output, offering players a dynamic and expressive musical palette to explore.

The GT gives Taylor a platform to introduce another fretboard wood, eucalyptus, that offers great potential alongside ebony. Its comparable weight and density are ideal for holding frets, and Taylor is able to source it responsibly either from plantation-grown trees or through its Urban Forestry initiative with West Coast Arborists, Inc., in Southern California.

Internal Bracing
The GT sports a new Taylor bracing system called C-Class bracing. The “C” is for "cantilevered". This bracing architecture borrows some of the functional benefits of Taylor’s V-Class bracing, including more stability, yielding impressive volume, sustain and intonation that sonically helps the guitar punch above its weight and sing with clarity and balance across the tonal spectrum.

Electronics

Taylor's ES2 is a revolutionary pickup design that delivers the latest in Taylor’s acoustic guitar amplification. The heart of the Expression System 2 is Taylor’s patented behind-the-saddle pickup, which features three uniquely positioned and individually calibrated pickup sensors. Because the pickup doesn't sit under the saddle, the bottom of the saddle comes in full contact with the bridge, allowing all the natural characteristics of the guitar's tone to come through clearly and evenly, whether your playing acoustically or amplifying the sound of the guitar. The position of the sensors enables a more dynamic range of acoustic sound to be captured when plugged-in.

Combined with Taylor’s custom-designed “professional audio”-grade preamp, this system produces exceptional amplified tone and responsiveness. Whether you plug into a PA, your favorite acoustic amplifier, or direct into recording software, the Expression System 2 faithfully conveys the voice of your Taylor guitar. If you want to adjust your sound, you can color it with easy-to-use volume, and active bass and treble controls. The Taylor Expression System 2 is powered by a proprietary 9-volt battery compartment.

  • Finally have my dream guitar in my hands!

I saw this guitar a few years ago but was thrown off by the price. However, the sound was perfect to my ears and the smaller size made me immediately bond with it. I tried the smaller gs mini koa but didn't find the sound pleasant or "just right" and it felt a little too small for my taste. Years later here I am and I couldn't be happier to be holding this beauty in my hands. The sound is so loud for how small this guitar is and rings beautifully. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

guitar center sent me a "clearance " guitar. it was a complete train wreck. it had been sold previously and registered to an owner, according to the taylor rep. it had a 6 inch crack on the top from the bridge to the bottom edge. the neck had been removed and replaced, poorly. the saddle had been shaved way too low. string buzz on frets. battery box was damaged. rusty strings. it was a deliberate attempt by guitar center to pawn off a total loss guitar on the next sucker.

I have spent the longest time researching guitars that I wanted to buy. I am a pretty small guy so I was attracted to the GS mini but felt that they lacked something, but I didn't know what. When I first saw the Grand Theater, I knew I had found it. There was only one in a 50 mile radius of my home and I was lucky enough to get it. The salesman was amazingly helpful and withstood my barrage of random questions. Guitar Center gets a bad rep but I always have great experiences when I purchase from them. When I hold this guitar I feel a connection that I have never felt before and I am excited to hear what music we can make together.

I walked into Guitar Center (NYC) to buy a case for my 40 year old Gibson Heritage and walked out with this guitar. Love the size really comfortable to play and the sound is close to a full sized Dreadnaught. I absolutely love this guitar and haven't put it down. Taylor hit a homerun with this guitar and the sales guys at Guitar Center were terrific!

  • Nice Little Guitar

Great little guitar. I test 2 dozen guitars in search of a great guitar tone for fingerstyle. I've found the GTe to be a great workhorse guitar that is very fun and comfortable to play. The slightly narrower neck, lightweight body and short scale length are very comfortable and the intonation and electronics are very usable for plug and play gigs. It just works. Now, if you're looking for a great, loud strummer, I would probably look elsewhere. It is not bad for strumming and I've played singing/strumming gigs with it but I think it really shines for fingerpicking. It records very nicely and I'm a big fan of the Aerocase over a hardshell. A Martin HD28 is my usual go to guitar and fantastic for strumming and most of my playing, but I've found the Taylor GTe to be more convenient to take around and is a bit less dear to me. When teaching lessons, the Taylor is the one that stays on the stand to grab quickly and doesn't overpower the student guitars but holds its own. I do feel that it is overpriced. Non-precious/reclaimed woods, not the highest grade top visually, satin finish, plain look etc really should put these, in my opinion, about a third lower in price. That being said, I played a lot of guitars and this was the only one I cared enough to walk away with and I'm enjoying it. Even more...my wife came with me on my journey and told me it was special and I should buy. Specs and woods can be nice guides, but I've found the overall guitar and whether or not it helps your playing and inspires you to play is more important. If you try it, like it for your applications, and don't mind a few extra dollars, it really is a great guitar and sounds much nicer than it should.

This is your next Guitar. I know what you're thinking, Change your mind!! This IS NOT a toy. It's a real usable guitar. Easy to fret, awesome sound, and plugged in. I had my doubts......they went away the first time I played this fine instrument. I gig 3 times a week (average). I WILL NOT use another guitar. Not even my Taylor 224 ce Koa DLX. I am sold and will purchase an 811E GT for my last ever guitar. I am that serious.
