TASCAM Model Mixers - How to get More Inputs and Outputs

TASCAM - Model Series Mixers & Logic Pro Set-up

TASCAM Model Series Loopback Audio to Record Your Skype Meeting

Description
The Tascam Model 16 is a 16-channel multitrack recorder with analog mixer and USB interface, designed for musicians and recording engineers. With 16 inputs, 8 mic preamps and 16 tracks of recording via an SD card, the Model 16 provides an all-in-one solution for capturing high-quality audio.
16-Channel Analog Mixer For Live Mixing
The built-in 16-channel analog mixer features 4-band EQ and AUX sends on each channel for shaping your sound. With a versatile input section including 10 mic preamps, 14 line inputs and 2 INS inputs, the Model 16 handles a full band with ease. The mixer's dedicated stereo output, control room outputs and headphone outputs provide monitoring options for any recording scenario.
Multitrack SD Recording and Playback
Record up to 16 tracks simultaneously to an SD card in CD-quality WAV format. Overdub, punch in and out, and edit tracks with the Model 16's transport controls and editing functions. Play back all 16 tracks through the mixer to rehearse parts, or bounce tracks together for a final stereo mix. With support for SDHC cards up to 32GB, you'll have plenty of recording time for your project.
USB Audio Interface For Computer Connectivity
The built-in USB audio interface allows you to connect the Model 16 to your Mac or Windows computer. Stream the Model 16's inputs and outputs to and from your digital audio workstation for further editing and mixing capabilities. You can also use the Model 16 as a standalone USB mixer, controlling levels via the analog mixer interface.
Additional Features
Other highlights include individual channel mute, solo and record arm buttons, reverb effects, slate mic and tone oscillator and MIDI in/out for transport control and sync. Rugged and roadworthy, the Model 16 is an all-in-one recording solution for capturing your music whenever and wherever inspiration strikes.

It'll take me some time to learn the capabilities of this machine, but already I can tell it is exactly what I had hoped for while shopping for this kind of unit.
Great mixer for Analog use, but terrible for Interface use

This is a great mixer for analog use for live performances or if your studio is running all hardware, but if you're working in the box and want to use as an interface as well, this definitely is NOT the choice. It didn't make any sense to me that the Model 16 (or even the Model 24) did not have the same DAW Controller capabilities as the Model 12, being that these 2 products are the upgrade to the Model 12, so losing a great function was a pretty dumb choice if you ask me. Also, the term interface for this Model 16 is misleading because, even though you CAN plug it USB to get signals from gear plugged into the mixer, not only can you NOT use the faders, you can't even control the gain of the signal when recording, which seems like the second most important function you would need (besides getting the actual signal of course). I have to admit, I didn't purchase this mixer with DAW control in mind, but as soon as I pulled it out of the box and realized it was a possibility if I were to purchase the cheaper version, it definitely lost my interest at that point. I do most of my production/recording in Abelton so having that function would have made my life 1000 times easier. If DAW capabilities aren't your concern, then this is an incredible mixer for the price range and a pretty cool looking one at that.
Like the product very much. Plenty of tracks to record on.

Recorder works like the old 008, easy to use. Professional output sound when EQ applied. Can't apply multiple effects to separate channels is my only disappointment. I run 8 cables from my Behringer x1222 usb mixer, from the tape outs for effects pre recording, and extra custom effects.
A 'hands-on' mixer /recorder for sure

If you like the analogue (non-DAW) side of recording, this is a great mixer recorder. Needs a larger user screen though (or better yet, an output to a PC monitor). I use the Bluetooth for the click-track app from my phone. Like all of TASCAM's gear - very well made and worth the price...

the Cat's meow. Yeah. Old fart here, did my first piano recital at 10, gigged on stage with a rock band at 15, now 67, and playin and recording ever since. Put together a recording studio 20+ years ago, tape - analog, all Tascam. Tascam is Pro, and they nailed it, again. Solidly built, sweet sounding, totally capable. I loved analog, M320 board into M38 8 channel R2R. This little board brings me all that, without the care and feeding of a tape deck, and with built in outboards. I've played with many portastudios over the years, both tape and hard drive, poor mic pre's, limited inputs, no phantom power, too many limitations - this does not share those problems. If you love playing with your computers, they are probably more powerful, but if you love playing music and being able to record your work, this is it. It is old school in layout, looks, and feel, but the mic pre's are good, the built in effects / compressor are decent; I have done some tracks totally within the box and dumped out to CD, and been satisfied, and without a killer learning curve or playing with a DAW. Read the comments under the M24 version as well, as they influenced me, and I agree after hands on time; and then choose based on your needed number of inputs, 24, 16, or 12.
Lots of tools in this compact board

I am looking at both the Tascam Model 12 and the Model 16. My question - Other than more channels, what is different with the Model 16 over the Model 12? Are there any incentives / deals / package deals with either Model? Any Manufacturer coupons applicable? Any incentives?
The number of channels is really it. Please give us a call to discuss pricing 877 687 5403submitted6 years ago

Does this record each input to a separate track that can be manipulated or removed independently of the others? That is, if I record the entire band live, can I adjust the EQ, effect, balance, etc... of the guitar track later without touching the other instruments? I didn't see any recommended size/speed for the SD card mentioned; What does it require? And, if I were to use the largest compatible SD card, and I recorded to all 16 tracks, how much recording time could I expect?
Yes you can. You can do about anything with this. Tascam has been building similar units for over 40 years. Recording time will depend on song sample rate and word length. According to Tascam, you can have up to 100 songs depending on the size of the card. Please see https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/tascam-model-24submitted6 years ago

Once you have saved a song and then return to the song later, how does it return all your mixing settings to where they were set before....especially if you used it on another song or live setting after you saved the song and you changed the settings for new song or live performance?

Might be a dumb question, but I've been surprised before. Do I need an external phantom power supply for my drum mics, or will phantom powered mics work just plugging them straight in?
No. This mixer has phantom power built into it.
