Punches Well Above Its Weight

I can not stress how impressed I am with this guitar. I'm a Fender Japan snob, but when I first saw this on the wall of my local Guitar Center, I bought it on the spot. I didn't even plug it in. Here's the one hangup: it is probably going to be set up terribly out-of-the-box or off the floor. The action was so high it was nearly unplayable and the intonation was off. That's not a setback for me though, as I set up and work on my own guitars. I fully expected to even have to replace the pickups. If you're new to guitar or not familiar with guitar maintenance, I'd recommend a professional set-up. I got her home and did a set-up. Once I did, I was incredibly impressed. The QC on mine was great. No sharp frets or any cosmetic issues. The neck is thin and a breeze to play. The rosewood fretboard is also fantastic. None of that cheap pau ferro garbage here. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the pickups. The neck is absolutely lovely clean or distorted. Not muddy, and it articulates very well. The same can be said for the middle position. The humbucker is nothing to write home about, but it's serviceable, and I've certainly played worse in this price range. Get this thing in front of a Tube Screamer and it really shines. I am now a convert to these Player II strats. Kudos to Fender for an excellent upper mid-tier product here. It beats the heck out of anything Gibson (or Epiphone) is putting out, particularly when it comes to quality control. Those products are a nightmare. I even recently recorded a demo with my band using this guitar and it sounded stellar. It's not quite on the level of a Japanese Fender, but it's darn close.

Love this guitar but paint chipped VERY easily.

Sounds and feels great. However, I accidentally bumped it a few times on the plastic nubs on my stand and it chipped the paint off the bottom of the guitar. All guitar center employees just shrugged when I showed them. For the price I would think the finish would be more durable.

    The looks and feel were excellent, but I was not crazy about the tones. I was expecting more versatility with the humbucker, but it did not workout that way in practice. Note: They had a couple of these in store and both of them had ripples in the paint below the bridge. #sweepstakes

    As a guitar collector and player I'm often asked which is my favorite guitar and which guitar would I recommend. I simply say, it's the guitar that inspires you to play. Forget price, name on the headstock. I have numerous core guitars and expensive collector instruments none of which inspire me to play more than this Player 2 Strat. It just feels right. I do love all my guitars and play all of them. But there's just a certain vibe that connects me to this particular guitar.
