MARKBASS MBC105017 MINI CMD121P

MARKBASS MBC105017 MINI CMD121P

Markbass

Description

The Markbass Mini CMD 121P is a bass combo amplifier that gives you fat sound with electric or acoustic basses. That makes the Mini CMD 121P amp perfect for rehearsal studios or small club applications. The Markbass Mini CMD 121P comes with a built-in Little Mark II bass head in the top rear area. Bassists will appreciate the Markbass-designed Vintage Loudspeaker Emulator and Variable Pre-shape Filter which help give this Mini CMD a warm natural sound. The Little Mark II also has a Neutrik Speakon combo jack output that accepts both Speakon or 1/4" speaker cable as well as a second 1/4" speaker out jack so you can hook up to another 8 ohm cab for a 500W rig. You'll also find a balanced XLR out, unbalanced tuner out so you can tune as you play without passing your signal through pedals. A Send and Return Effect loop protects you from losing your signal if one of your pedals dies or a cable in the chain gives out.

    Perfect for Geezers!

As I approach my golden years (and continue gigging), the SVT is just not gonna work for me. Heard about Markbass in Bass Player, and bought it on a gamble. It is perfect for club gigs, gyms, even outdoor gigs. Recently a guy came out of the audience and said "Hey man, it kills me to say this 'cause I'm a bass player, but you're too loud!" Although the tone is not as good as a bigger cab, I gladly make the tradeoff for the ridiculous ease of transport - I can go from car to stage with all my gear in one trip. Need more power? Go through the board.

Service and design flaws will cost you

I purchased this amp 3.5 years ago with the procoverage. I bought it for the same reasons you are looking at it (light weight, sounds good, enough power for most of the venues we play). What I didnt know is the class D switch mode amps are less stable and in particular using this amp with the perfectly matched Markbass 1x15 ext cab led to the amp blowing two fuses and never coming on again. In order to service the amp under warranty you have to ship it CA (only one place services warranty claims) out side of warranty only a select few service centers exist and I had to ship from MA to NY. It took 2 months to get it back due to back order of parts. Cost over $300 to fix. The repair center explained it's a common problem due to design flaw and have communicated this to Mark Bass. I have lost confidence in the amp which is not a good thing when your gigging and count on it to work. Do your home work, check the Bass forums, google it as you are likely to encounter an issue eventually. Very disappointed with Mark Bass as a company and will never buy their products again!

I will be using this amp primarily for band practice and in churches for worship performances. It has been plenty loud enough to cut through in these situations. One down side for me was the lack of adjustable center frequencies for the low mid and high mid EQ. The low mid has a center frequency of around 385 Hz and the high mid is around 850 Hz. Usually I prefer a lower low mid center frequency and a higher high mid frequency. In other words, a semi parametric EQ would be nice. I worked around this by using the variable Old School filter control. I was able to bring up the low mids and cut some highs with this control. In the end, I got almost the exact sound I prefer to use. Love the scoop options switch for thumb slapping as well.

I was looking for a bass speaker with the amp included and found this mini but powerful speaker. Simply the best! There's no need for additional speakers.

I bought this combo in 2007 back when Markbass was the darling of the lightweight bass amp crowd. To this day, as it was back then, I never wished for more power. I have 2 other MB cabs I use if I or my band wanted more sound dispersal onstage or for a bigger venue. But rest assured it's not because I can't turn it up. I've had two complaints during gigs before about the bass being too much, one of them was in a big ballroom, I was using this by itself and some upstairs hotel guests complained. The other was in a club when the band member said something about the bass being too weak so I indulged them and they told me to turn it down :) Actually I'm just very aware of stage volume and how what sounds okay on stage might be killing the first few rows in the audience so I never turn it up until the spectators ask for the bass. As far as reliability, this combo never failed me. It turns on and powers up every time I want it to. Knobs are quiet, all the jacks still work and the rat fur exterior has held up. This is after years of use and gigs. I am very careful about not placing drinks on it and I taped the direct in on the top face shut to prevent the ingress of dust. And of course, being able to bring all my gear in one trip is priceless. The cabs I pair it with if needed are a MB New Yorker 604 and a MB 102P Traveler. I have yet to encounter a gig situation where the 121 and one of these cabs did not suffice.

I bought the mark bass mini a year ago. It has exceeded my expectations. It's sounds surprising. It is very warm and it has a great push. There is not a better amp for the money. I may buy another. I stopped using my Carvin 500 watt biamp, because I love the Mark Bass amp. I miss the noise gate, but that's not a problem. I use a Fender P Bass Ultra and a Gibson SG Bass, with a Boss GT-1B processor; the sound is amazing.

There is no AUX in, unlike the smaller, 10" Marcus Miller Mini. I'm considering both amps but I'd like to play along to music from a CD player through the amp. Is there an alternative to an AUX in with this 12" speaker model? Thanks, John

In the video the guy said something about dropping from 8 ohms to 4 for more power, how do you do that? Are there different versions of the same amp, 4 ohm and 8 ohm? Or is there a way to change the number of ohms in the amp?

      Open Reply - Charles
This is only when using an external speaker cabinet that has either 8 or 4 ohm impedance.
