Description

The 2big Triple comes with FireWire 800, FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 interfaces for PC or Mac users. This easy-to-use 2-disk RAID is ideal for storing office data, archiving image banks or audio/video editing. FireWire 800 delivers fast burst transfer rates of up to 90MB/s** in RAID 0. Choose from among 4 RAID levels depending on your needs: SAFE 100 (RAID 1) for maximum security (100% data redundancy on each hot-swappable disk) with automatic data rebuilding if a spare disk*** is needed; FAST (RAID 0) for maximum speed; BIG (concatenation) for maximum capacity; or JBOD to use the disks separately. Other advanced features include: two lockable drives; a heat sink metal design for natural cooling; "On/Auto/Off" triple power management; and rackmount configuration. EMC Retrospect Express advanced backup management and data restoration software, which can be launched by the LaCie Shortcut Button, is included for Windows & Mac.

A RAID configuration allows several hard drives to act as a single unit in various ways, such as striping or mirroring. Some potential advantages of RAID are greater capacity, reliability, speed, throughput or better data integrity (or a combination of these) ” often at a more affordable price than comparable single drives.

Throughout LaCie's line of RAID solutions, there are various RAID levels that each has limitations and advantages. Choosing the right RAID level depends entirely upon the user's needs.

Common RAID Levels

RAID 0: Striped Set - (or Striped Volume) splits data evenly across two or more disks with no parity information for redundancy.

RAID 1: Mirrored Set - creates a mirror or exact copy of a set of data onto two or more disks, which is useful when read performance is more important than capacity.

RAID 0+1: Mirror of Stripes - is a RAID level used for sharing and replicating data among multiple disks.

RAID 5: Striped Set With Parity - uses block-level striping with parity data distributed across all disks ” an ideal way to get affordable redundancy.

RAID 10: Stripe of Mirrors - sometimes called RAID 1+0, it's similar to a RAID 0+1 but reversed since RAID 10 is a stripe of mirrors.

Concatenation: JBOD - "Just a Bunch of Disks" is a popular way to combine multiple disks into a single virtual drive simply.
