A good, basic all-rounder.

I bought it as a PC audio interface to easily play along with songs, and as a MIDI controller for VSTis. Essentially, it fulfills both roles, albeit with minor compromises: Pros: A few good/usable tones (though not many). USB multi-client MIDI (works fine under the new Windows MIDI Services as well). Logical menu system and intuitive operation. Cons: PC audio resolution is limited to 44.1kHz / 16-bit stereo (not a huge deal, of course). ASIO driver is available, but the adjustable latency feels high for live VSTi performance (Ctrl+Shift+A brings up additional parameters, but there is no documentation for them). Sustain pedal sends data on 3 MIDI channels (this confuses the host; you need to set the input to channel 1). Key size/playability takes some getting used to. Limited sound editing capabilities (2 layers, relative volume, and octave); only one DSP effect can be active at a time. The 10 registration memories are insufficient if you want to use your own custom sounds.

A passing fancy!

Having had previous keyboards, including a top line model in the 1990's, and a small one for use when traveling, I am disappointed with this keyboard. I thought after 30 years, there would be more flexibility in setup. I use split keyboard, and have always had two instruments on right, and something different on left. Yamaha has no individual volume adjustment, so the secondary right "sound" is not loud enough, should be adjustable. Same for the left hand on split keyboard. Also should be adjustable for key, so that left hand could be an octave higher, as my previous 2 keyboards and digital piano were able to do.

    It's a really nice product. My last keyboard was PSR-E443. I liked it and used it for almost 10 years. But it became old and I had to buy another. My first thought was to have something better and from new generation, at least E483. But I didn't have enough money. So i decided to take the E383. But let me say that I'm impressed by the quality. It's above my expectations, even better on many fields than my old E443 : better sound quality, better audio to PC connection through USB, better MIDI, more African Styles, more User Styles possibilities, etc. I'm not in a hurry anymore to have an expensive model. Thank you

    This piano/keyboard was even better than I could have imagined, I'm glad I got the smaller number of keys version as you can change the octave up or down, so I can get the lower keys, and if you're playing along with songs you can change the 440 tuning up and down to match it. There's far too many features to list, but the baby grand piano sound was what I really wanted and it sounds great, I added sustain and chorus and it sounds great, plus the keys have weight and are sensitive to how hard or soft you play. And for the price, it's a no brainer, amazing!

    I chose the Yamaha PSR-E383 after sampling its piano using a store display model. It was all I needed to begin playing and to use in furthering my composition skills. But the Yamaha was more than just a piano--and I've only begun exploring it. What has thoroughly entranced me was the sound library. I explored the woodwinds and strings and was taken aback by the beauty of the sound. I didn't expect that I'd spend any time with them. But I've lost track of time exploring the strings. I started a new composition for flute and cello based on being able to work with the sound library Yamaha has built into the PSR-E383. I highly recommend this keyboard!
