Fender Upped Their Game on the Squier Mini

Arrived playable right out of the box after tuning, with perfect neck relief and just a few tweaks needed at the bridge for intonation. I've got a few older Squier Mini Strats, and this one has upgraded parts compared to them: - Better tuners - Quality nut - Maple fretboard - Flush output jack on the side (Some may consider this last a negative since it doesn't have the usual cup jack plate on the front of the guitar like a traditional Stratocaster. But I like it so far and it looks like it won't come loose like the older models can.) Pickups use ceramic magnets like the old models, but they always sounded good to me. The frets could use a bit of smoothing at the ends and a polish - but so did the older models. The neck is a bit lighter color than I usually like (seems to be common with their latest Asian imports), and the satin finish looks like it's almost not there, but it feels fine to play so far. I would recommend this for kids and beginners (it'll be a great first guitar), or for fans the Squier Mini - the quality is better than it used to be, so it won't need as much work to play great!

Breaking Out the Cleaning Supplies

I bought this for my son's 6th birthday. I checked it before giving it to him. It was filthy. It looked as though it had been handled by a car mechanic who had not washed his hands. I could see fingerprint patterns.The grime on the face of the pick guard was no big deal because of the cellophane covering, but the grime on the beveled edge of the pick guard was in the plastic. There was grime on the nut, on the back of the headstock, and in a few places on the body. The Musician's Friend customer service guy was great. He arranged an exchange, and was truly sympathetic. Since I couldn't give it to my son for his birthday, I decided to save it for another occasion. I left it unopened for a few months. Today, I opened it just to check it. Filthy with the same kind of grime. I checked the serial number against a photo I had taken of the original mini. It's a different guitar. Says a lot about the quality control at Fender. Too late to get an exchange, so I'm going to do what I can to clean it. I'm also going to write to Fender to complain. Musician's Friend was great on their end. I only recommend that they open some of the mini Squiers to check them for condition and give Fender some grief for any that they find to be less than clean.

    My step daughter is only 9 and wanted to start playing guitar. We started with a Loog and she quickly got the hang of it so we were looking for something very short scale but still a real guitar. This checked all the boxes. It was easy to set up and good quality. We'll get plenty of use out of it after she passes it on to her little brother.

    Bought this to replace a beat up one given to me. It a great couch, travel, play in the car during kids sport's practice guitar. However the pickguard is a lavender color. But I have another to part out. You can't just buy another mini strat pickguard. Plays great & super fun!
