Description

The Hagstrom ’67 Viking II is a slim hollowbody that looks familiar and futuristic at the same time. The original only had a 14-year run, ending in 1974, making this reissue especially welcome. With its bound F-holes, flame maple body and trapeze tailpiece, the Viking II has a funky swagger; it's versatile, too—the H-52 mini humbuckers coil split, providing a smorgasbord of sounds that will fit into any format. Tonewoods, Fit and Finish

The Viking II has a svelte body made from flamed Canadian maple. You can safely call it "sweet"—the same type of tree is used to make maple syrup. The gloss finish highlights the beauty of this guitar.

Viking II Neck Construction

If you're a fan of fast action, you'll be happy with this Hagstrom. The truss rod is made from a rigid, yet lightweight alloy, so the maple neck is both thin and strong. The fretboard is Resinator, a composite that's uniform in density and more stable than standard woods. It eliminates "dead spots," so each string has maximum sustain.

Signature Electronics

The H-52 mini humbuckers have smaller coils than a traditional ’bucker. The result is a tighter, brighter tone. Alnico V magnets let you push the H-52s harder for higher-output sounds. If single coils are your thing, each pickup can be split for stinging leads or Hendrix-style rhythms. Subtle adjustments of the individual volume and tone controls yield a wide variety of workable tones.

Precision Hagstrom Hardware

The tune-o-matic bridge sits on a wood block, letting the strings' vibrations transfer more effectively to the body. Each string has a long-throw saddle, making intonation easier. A trapeze tailpiece and 18:1 ratio die-cast tuner complete the package. All of the hardware on the ’67 Viking II gleams with a gold finish.

Other high-quality specifications include pearloid block inlays, a Graph Tech black Tusq XL nut and medium jumbo frets. A hardshell case or gig bag is available separately.

    My Hagstrom brand new out of the box looked amazing but the gaudy plastic Hagstrom logo on the headstock was falling off. I easily removed it with almost no effort and I like the looks better with it off. Cord jack was barely threaded on. It was tight but as soon as I plugged in I pushed it inside of the guitar body. I was able to reattach it bit only a few threads protrude from the body and it's very flimsy. I'm sure I'll have to address this defect again. I also had some significant fret buzz and intonation was way off. It sounds great and has a great feel to it but the poor build quality was very disappointing

    Super light, stylish and great sounding guitar. Has a coil-tap on the mini-humbuckers but they just sound so clear I forget to use it. Finish is stunning and doesn't show up on pictures / the internet but really pops in person. All in all I took a chance and am glad I took it. Great guitar that's not your typical Fender / Gibson.

    I ordered what was listed as a new Hagstrom '67 Viking in transparent cherry. What I received was a guitar that was not in the original packaging , no warranty card no invoice just a guitar in bubble wrap. When I unwrapped it I found there were 3 scuffs on the headstock, buckle rash, the strings were corroded as were the frets, frets 12 thru 18 were especially bad. There were also 4 significant cracks in the finish near the neck pickup. Shameful this was ever listed as a new guitar. They did promptly issue me a return label and have been assured I'll get a full refund (though it hasn't appeared on my credit card yet) so they did make it right but I don't think I will ever buy a high end guitar here.

    My first guitar was a Hagstrom 2. I wanted a total hollow guitar like a Casino and I like the fast necks Hagstroms offer. So I pulled the trigger. The action was good. However, the intonation was the worst I encountered in a brand new. A local Luther fixed that and made some other adjustments. It plays to its high potential now. It is also missing a knob dot. I mentioned both issues to Hagstrom and they replied by asking me for the serial number. So I imagine they are tracing back to the assembly point. Tone is good especially at the neck pickup. The bridge pu is a little thin but that is the vintage sound. I would recommend the guitar on the basis of quality but below I said I wouldn't because this is a niche axe with a small but dedicated cadre like me. So most of my friends don't fall into the vintage arch top category.

    Is the bridge truly fixed to the body, as it looks floating in the photo? Do the Tune-O-Matic posts go all the way through the wooden base and screw into the body? Is there any supporting structure (wooden block) underneath? Thanks.

    1) No. but that doesn't mean it's floating. You're not understanding what 'floating' is. A floating bridge makes 'no' contact. 2) No. 3) No. That would be a semi-hollow.

    All guitars vary depending on the density of the wood. Manufacturers usually only spec size and type of wood. Guitars are generally between 6 and 12 lbs. They can be more. The only way to know the weight of an individual instrument is to weigh it. This will be 7 - 8.5 lbs
