Choosing the right mouthpiece for you is even more complicated than choosing the instrument itself. The mouthpiece your friend or idol swears by and the one that sounds best for you may be completely different, depending on your body and how and when you play. For over 40 years, Warburton has been creating mouthpieces for brass and woodwind instruments, and they have perfected the craft to compliment every setting, body and sound.
Warburton's trumpet and cornet mouthpiece tops are far from one-size-fits-all. First, you'll want to choose a material. Delrin plastic doesn't get cold or hot like many other materials, making it ideal for outdoor winter use. Lexan, on the other hand, is best for hot weather because it is less likely to slip and slide around on sweaty skin. Silver also offers some resistance, while gold provides a slippery surface and is perfect for sensitive skin.
Next, look at the rim. A narrower rim offers more flexibility for quick notes and arpeggios, while a wider rim reduces pressure on the lips to increase the amount of time you're able to play. The cup shape you select depends on your intended usage; for a studio lead trumpet sound, go with ESV, ES, S, SV or M. A piccolo trumpet sound is best achieved with an S, SV or M cup. M, MC or MD cups help you get a brass quintet sound, while an orchestral sound requires an MC, MD, D or XD cup.
Finally, you need to consider the size. Warburton trumpet mouthpieces are arranged from largest to smallest counting up from 1 to 10. The larger the diameter, the deeper the cup to help you reach a lower range and get a rich sound. On the other hand, smaller diameters generally mean a shallower cup, which helps with higher registers and results in a brighter tone.
Beyond the trumpet, Warburton also offers saxophone and trombone mouthpieces of equal caliber. Scott Bliege, the lead trombone player for Phil Collins who has formerly performed with Frank Sinatra and recorded with Styx, swears by Warburton mouthpieces, as do many other professionals. With seemingly unlimited options, Warburton has a mouthpiece to suit every musician's specific needs.
