JHS Fumble JFET Clean Boost Pedal - Orange
Description
The JHS Fumble JFET clean boost pedal turns one of the unlikely stories in boutique pedal history into a compact, affordable tone-enhancement tool for players who want bigger, more articulate clean tone without added overdrive compression. After JHS discovered that the clean side of the NOTADÜMBLË V1 accidentally contained the wrong circuit, players began asking for that mistakenly included sound as its own standalone pedal. The circuit traces back to a Dumble BBC-1 unit reverse engineered for John Mayer and connected to the FET-style clean boost sounds often associated with players like Larry Carlton, Eric Johnson and Robben Ford. Built around a true-bypass JFET circuit with Input and Output controls, the Fumble delivers a unique clean boost response that works equally well as an always-on pedal, front-end preamp boost or pedalboard tone sweetener for clean amps, edge-of-breakup rigs and stacked overdrive setups.
A Clone of a Clone With Real Pedalboard Utility
The Fumble is based on the Dumble BBC-1 circuit JHS had previously reverse engineered, later discovering that the original itself appears to draw heavily from a 1970s Barcus Berry acoustic preamp design. That unusual lineage gives the pedal its personality: not a high-gain drive, not a traditional transparent overdrive and not a typical clean boost pedal. Instead, the Fumble behaves like a JFET preamp that can add size, clarity and articulation before overdrives, into a clean amp or at the end of a signal chain. Its low-gain character and dynamic response make it especially useful for players shaping touch sensitivity and note definition rather than chasing heavier saturation.
Input and Output Controls With Unusual Gain Shaping
The two-knob control set is simple, but the Input control behaves very differently from the gain control found on most boost pedals. Output functions as the master volume, while Input simultaneously attenuates bass and front-end gain entering the circuit. Fully clockwise, the Input control leaves the signal full, open and louder; rolling it back gradually tightens the low end while thinning and focusing the response. That unusual behavior makes the Fumble useful as an always-on clean boost, a JFET preamp into pedals like a Timmy, King of Tone, Klon or Morning Glory, a front-end push into a dirty amp or a solo boost placed near the end of the signal chain.
Clean JFET Response for Touch-Sensitive Players
The Fumble is designed for guitarists who want more articulation, responsiveness and dynamic interaction from the gear they already use. Into a clean amp, it can add presence and clarity without pushing the sound fully into overdrive. Into a broken-up tweed, Plexi-style amp or gain pedal, it can make the response feel larger, tighter and more defined, especially when the Input control is rolled back for a more focused attack. Assembled in Kansas City and measuring 1.96" x 3.93" x 1.21", the JHS Fumble JFET clean boost pedal delivers the accidentally discovered circuit from the NOTADÜMBLË story in a compact standalone pedal that is straightforward, highly musical and genuinely useful across a wide range of pedalboard setups.
