Twelve String Re-Stringing Problem

I'm trying to re-string my acoustic twelve string, but the 6th string (the high-octave "G") breaks right at the post before I get it up to pitch. Why is the string breaking? What can I do to fix the problem?

First check to make sure that your electronic tuner is calibrated correctly.  Consult the manufacturer for details on how to do this.  It could be that there is too much tension on the string (the tuner is calibrated too high).  You might try a light or extra light gauge set of strings or tuning down a half step (a common 12 string practice) to put less tension on the strings.  This also makes the guitar play easier.  You may also want to check the saddle, nut and post under that string to see if they have a sharp edge that may be cutting the string.  You can smooth sharp edges with a small file.  Consult a qualified luthier for more details.
