Passive vs. Active Equalization

What is the difference between an Active and Passive EQ and how does it change the sound?

A Passive Equalizer takes the original signal and bleeds specific frequencies straight to ground. This is the traditional way to build an equalizer. An Active Equalizer uses additional circuitry (such as transistors) to selectively cut or boost specific frequencies. An Active Equalizer will have a much more pronounced effect.
