Tuning a 12-String Guitar

How do I tune my 12-string guitar?

For standard tuning it should be:

< low > E E A A D D G G B B E E < high >

The second set of strings (the smaller ones) are tuned one octave (12 notes) higher on the 4 heavier pairs. Each of the other two pairs (the high B's and high E's) are tuned to the same pitch.

Some people choose to tune 12-string guitars down a half step (1 fret) or a full step (2 frets) because the 12 strings create a lot of tension and could cause damage to the neck or top of the guitar.
