Behind the PRS Silver Sky Guitar with John Mayer

The Making of the Silver Sky | 1 of 4 | PRS Guitars

Description

The PRS Silver Sky is the result of a close collaboration between Grammy Award-winning musician John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith. More than two and half years in the making, the Silver Sky is a vintage-inspired instrument that is at once familiar, but also newly PRS through and through. This model was based off of Mayer and Smith’s favorite elements from 1963 and 1964 vintage instruments, resulting in an idealized version of a vintage single-coil guitar. The attention that was paid to every detail sets this guitar apart
Vintage inspired, yet thoroughly PRS
Some of the more distinctive specifications include, the headstock shape, tuners, neck and fretboard, bridge, and pickups and electronics. The headstock shape is based on PRS’s trademark design, but inverted to both accommodate Mayer’s playing style and also to keep a consistent length of string behind the nut, which makes staying in tune easier. The tuners are a traditional vintage-style, closed-back tuner, but with PRS’s locking design.
The right feel...the right sound
The neck shape was modeled after 1963/1964 vintage instruments, and the fretboard has a 7.25” radius. The moment your hand grabs this neck, it just feels right. Like the tuners, the steel tremolo takes a classic design and incorporates PRS’s trem arm and Gen III knife-edge screws. The bridge on the Silver Sky is setup flush to the body in the neutral position so that the tremolo bridge only goes down in pitch. By keeping the bridge in contact with the body, the guitar itself is acoustically louder, which improves the signal to noise ratio of the single-coil pickups. The 635JM single-coil pickups are very round and full, with a musical high end that is never “ice-picky” or brash.Other high-quality specifications include a bone nut, a molded metal jack plate that is curved and makes plugging and unplugging a guitar cable hassle-free, retooled knobs, fretwire that is slightly smaller than what you’d find on most PRS electric guitars, and PRS’s double action truss rod (accessible from the front of the headstock for ease of use). Includes gig bag.

Great guitar, worthy of the hype
Awesome guitar. When I saw it, I had to try it out. Neck was a bit thin at first, but after playing it a while, I really like the vintage style neck. The pups sound great. Has that 'strat' sound. It definitely won't replace my American Pro, but it's a fun guitar to play.

Plastic Tuners
Who in their right mind would pay this much for this? I know there's plenty of fans but man cheap gig bag cheap tuners. For 2k get out of here. The head stock alone looks ridiculous and cheap. The sound is killer I will say but man this should be much cheaper for all the plastic your getting.

Best Strat type guitar in the price range
submitted2 years ago
byJon

I've played around 6 of these at various stores. Overall I would say these are definitely the best strat style guitar in the $2,500 range. The consistency is much better than Fender at a similar price but if you can play before buying, of course that is ideal as all are good but some are better than others. Addressing some other complaints, the tuners do have plastic heads but are not 'cheap' or low quality. Gibson also puts plastic tuners on their $6,000+ custom shop guitars. It does come with a gig bag which some people may not like but it's a very nice gig bag and I usually use them to travel with guitars and they take up much less storage space. Comparing it to my 1962 CS: quality and playability are similar. The PRS pickups are a bit more refined and articulate. The PRS is half the price.
From a devout Fender player - this is great

First off, I've been a bit of a Fender fanboy for a long time. Like many people, I have often scoffed at the idea of paying ultra-lux money for a copy of a strat. But this past weekend I went to my local GC to play the Fiore and, MCCarty and some CU24s, some more Fenders and even a couple of Les Pauls. After two hours in the room, I came home with an Orion Green SS. I just simply could not stop playing it. So comfortable to hold and play, once my hand adjusted to the neck shape. But the tone immediately grabs you as being full and round, bright enough, and not nearly as overly-harsh as my Am Pro2 can be. Build quality and finish was excellent, and this thing was so fresh that buffing compound is still coming to the surface after playing. Fantastic guitar that probably won't make me sell off my Fenders, but definitely inspires and excites me to play. So happy I finally got one.

I have always been a fender strat player. This guitar has completely modernized the strat and in my opinion has better tone than most guitars, period. The feel on this guitar is indescribably smooth and isn't fathomable until you pick up the silver sky in person. My neck is rosewood and it feels like butter and is so easy to play and sound phenomenal. I chose the Tungsten color and is gorgeous in photos and in person! There is no high frequency pitch noises that I dislike sometimes with strats. There is also no flat buzzing sounds. Very beautiful and deep tones. Any little bend gets matched tone quality it deserves that some guitars don't perfectly pick up on. PRS is made with such great detail and you can hear/ feel that high quality in this guitar. The JM/ PRS custom pickups designed to be a 60's strat sounds majestic. PRS feels more custom than fender in my opinion. So I think they did a spectacular job with this guitar (have not played the SE version yet). The only complaints I have is that the tone knobs are plastic and that this guitar comes in a really cheap road bag. I thought with how high quality this guitar is and how expensive it is that certainly there should be a nice hard case for this guitar. Other than that, this guitar is one of the best I've ever played. This guitar gets a lot of heat for being too similar to a fender strat but the truth is, this is a very unique guitar. It's the Tesla of guitars in today's guitar market.

Overall I am very pleased with this guitar. Fit and finish are excellent right out of the box. Rosewood fingerboard seems a little thin but I can't hear too much a difference between a maple and rosewood anyway. The only complaint is the gig bag. What a joke. Guitar is worth it though
Basically perfect

Fantastic guitar! I love the color and the attention to detail is fantastic. The only thing is the action and the plastic tuners. I love a vary low action and I had a vary high action out of the box but a Couple adjustments and it was perfect. If you pay over 2k for a guitar I with you would get a hard case and not plastic tuners. Over all sounds grate play's grate.

Hi. I am considering purchasing the gig bag for a PRS silver sky, to be used for my PRS custom 24. I'm concerned about the length of that case, if the size would fit my C 24. Can you tell me if the silver sky dimensions, length in particular, are the same as a custom 24? Or would my custom 24 need a longer, taller case. Thank you, John.
Yes. The bag will fit both.submitted3 years ago

You have this advertised item as an open box L18249005003026 ita a red silver sky prs. Can you be more specific on any scratches/dents/ etc or is it just an open bix.
I’m sorry, we don’t know what the blemish is. The blemishes will be perhaps minor scratches, average handling wear. There will be no effect on playability or sound. Open-Box items have been returned to our distribution center under the Guitar Center Return Policy. They are in "Blemished" condition if they are removed from the factory packaging and show cosmetic signs of use.submitted3 years ago

May I know in what form is this guitar blemished? Thank you
Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing what the blemish is. It would only be a minor cosmetic flaw and would not effect the items play ability.submitted7 years ago

Hi, I want to pre-order the Silver Sky in "Tungsten" color but I want to confirm one with a case. Can confirmation be given on the case. There are only 500 issued with cases and I want to insure one in that color with a case. Warm regards
Unfortunately, we have sold out of our first incoming stock of this guitar. It is unlikely this will come with the case at this point.
