Don't hesitate, just get one

This is my third Epiphone in just under a year, and while the others are really good, this one stands out. Playability is as good as it gets, and the pickups sound wonderful. Absolutely no need for an upgrade there. I've got a fairly extensive collection ranging from Squiers to vintage Gibsons, and this holds it's own with anything else in my collection. I've tried the Gibson version, and while that was a superb guitar, I see no reason to drop the extra cash for it. Now the inevitable bad, the out of the box setup was atrocious. Action was 7/32's on the bass side, 6/32's treble. The relief was over .020" and the truss rod was completely slack and indeed slid forward in it's channel when I tried to pull the Allen wrench out to reposition it for another half turn. Yes, it was that loose. However, about an hour's worth of setup time put her right, and the action is down to a low for me 4/32's bass and just over 2/32's treble with just a touch of relief and very little buzzing that can be attributed to new string rattle. Intonation was as good as a wraptail bridge will get out of the box, and she plays in tune across the fretboard. The nut only required a slight deepening of the string grooves and trimming down the top surface to a proper height. She stays in tune while playing and is almost perfectly in tune when I pick her up the next day. Fit and finish are excellent apart from a bunch of sawdust (??!!!) under the pick guard. The paint is beautiful, though I suspect Faded Pelham Blue and the Inverness Green of my ES-335 are as near to the same color as makes no difference, at least to my eye. Bottom line, she's a brilliant guitar. I don't usually name my guitars, but I've decided her name is Abigail, because she's just beautiful. P90 equipped SG are amongst my favorites, and this one is better than my Gibson Faded SG Special I converted to P90's. As the title suggests, just get one before Gibson realizes their off brand offering is superior to it's more expensive Nashville made counterpart.

Needed a lot of work right out of the box.

I've owned this particular guitar for about a week now and it's not bad. Having said that right out of the box the action was sky high, truss rod was way to tight, it needed a fret level and nut replacement. It was also missing the intonation set screws. I chose to fix the one I received rather than take a gamble a replacement. Overall it's still a great guitar but I wouldn't recommend purchasing a new Epiphone without playing it first. Based on other reviews they seem to be having similar QC issues across their whole line.

I went to guitar center shopping for a strat and fell in love with the epiphone sg special inspired by gibson with p90's I really like the tones and playability of this instrument. The sparkling burgundy is beautiful, fit and Finnish is well done. After a proper setup this guitar rocks!

This is my first SG, as well as my first guitar with P90s and I'm impressed I am obsessed with how light it is! I can have it as a "shredder" guitar and not have to settle for Ibanez or PRS Great, crunchy tone in the bridge, decent one in the neck A versatile piece for a good price

  • Simply a great guitar

I got this guitar from my dad, he got it when I was very young and I STILL have it. Great for a wide variety of genres, mainly rock and other genres with a crunchy tone. This isn't as crisp and bright as ones with humbuckers, but if you want something that sounds like blue album Weezer or American idiot Green day, this is great. P90s are crunchy by nature, and using my DS-1 with it was a bit to much gain for my amp, it just ended up being a little muddy. But it's a great guitar. Great tone, great look, and AMAZING feel, it feels better than any other guitar I've ever played.

I wanted to buy some P90s and put them in an existing guitar but this guitar cost about the same price it would cost to do that. Then I saw this and read the reviews and figured buying this guitar made much more sense though the last thing I needed was another guitar. Anyway, the reviews were right. The fit and finish are excellent. The P90s are great! They do growl. It's a very distinctive growl, like nothing else I own. And they can sound as sweet as pie too. The action is a smidge higher than I'd like but not bad. No buzz at all at that height. The only thing I can say negative is that I had to really dig in on the notes above the 15th fret to get them to ring out clearly. Could be the strings. The intonation up through the 12th fret was almost perfect, less so above that. I would lower the action myself but I can't quite see how to accurately adjust the intonation after that. A Tune-O-Matic bridge would be nice but they had to cut cost somewhere I guess. It's very light, very comfortable. And pertty too. Overall, for the money, I have no regrets though I have not even had it 24 hours yet. The distinctive P90 tones, playability, fit and finish and price of this thing makes it an excellent value in my opinion. Also, I have often had switch problems with Epis in the past, but so far, none with this. No crackling sounds or hesitancy switching. Solid switching so far.

Wow! Inspired by Gibson description in this case is well earned. Frets are polished. Intonation is spot on. Finish is very good. In my case no factory flaws whatsoever. Plays amazingly well. I do LOVE these P90's!!
