Yamaha Silent Guitar SLG200 - A day in the life

The new Yamaha SLG200 Silent Guitar – Overview with Daniel Ho

Yamaha Silent Guitar – Mike Stern

Description
The Yamaha SLG200N Silent nylon-string guitar is a game-changing instrument for classical guitarists. Boasting Yamaha's groundbreaking SRT Powered system, it reproduces the rich tone of a high-end acoustic nylon-string guitar with stunning realism. At the same time, its minimalist frame reduces feedback and allows for nearly silent practice, recording or performance. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, the SLG200N opens up a world of possibilities.
SRT Powered Delivers Authentic Acoustic Sound
Yamaha's SRT Powered technology recreates the resonant tone of an acoustic nylon-string guitar with meticulous accuracy. Developed in collaboration with top artists, SRT Powered models the sound of a premium Yamaha classical guitar as captured by a carefully placed mic in a professional studio. The result is a lifelike reproduction of an acoustic guitar's natural sustain, depth and ambience. SRT Powered sound can be blended with the SLG200N's piezo pickups for more tonal options in recording or performance.
Nearly Silent for Practice Anytime, Anywhere
The SLG200N's minimal frame is 90% quieter than a traditional classical guitar, letting you practice, compose or record at any hour without disturbing others. Its detachable top section and included gig bag provide superb portability for grabbing inspiration on the go. Lightweight yet durable, the SLG200N is ideal for travel or fly dates when you want to pack light without sacrificing tone.
Familiar Playability and Versatility
Classical guitarists will appreciate the SLG200N's slim neck, low action and thin body that make extended playing comfortable and agile. Its cutaway design provides easy access to higher frets. The SLG200N also features onboard chromatic tuning, battery or and the ability to connect external music players, effects or headphones. Whether you play classical, flamenco or contemporary styles, the SLG200N is a versatile, full-featured instrument that inspires creativity.
A Modern Take on Tradition
With an innovative yet elegant form, the SLG200N brings a contemporary vibe to the timeless contours of a nylon-string guitar. The result of a collaboration between Yamaha's design team and the Yamaha Design Laboratory, the SLG200N's stylish shape complements its rich, nuanced tone and high-tech functionality. Yamaha has crafted an instrument that pays homage to tradition while pioneering a new generation of classical guitars.

The SLG 200N Silent Guitar is AWESOME!
I was familiar with the pervious versions and was somewhat skeptical. Then recently I became interested after looking at a Godin Grand Concert Ambiance. I stumbled upon the SLG200N and after checking out many reviews and Youtube vids, I pulled the trigger. See the video for an early trial run I made. Although classically trained in Spanish and Classical guitar, I arrange and play meditative instrumentals and arrangements for my yoga, meditation and mindfulness teaching. My wife and I travel a lot and play various large and small yoga venues... during my review period we have taken it on a 9 day tour and it has exceeded my expectations. It compliments my other Spanish guitars and Sitar. I can not recommend it enough. My only small detail is that I wish the tuner allowed for A423 Hz as I use that sometime but I can hang a Snark on and get there... so its a minor detail.

INTERESTING -- PERFECT FOR SOME, DIFFERENT THAN I EXPECTED
After all the reviews on the internet, all very taken with the instrument, I decided to pull the trigger and try it. I want to be able to practice silently at work (note: on lunch and breaks, not on the work clock!) and at night, take it on trips, etc. It sounded good on the internet -- but of course the little computer speakers/ipad is not like sitting next to Segovia in a concert hall! I have a Martin Backpacker nylon string which I've been using at work -- also more a uke sound than like my real guitar. I'm primarily interested now in classical guitar. This is not really a classical guitar sound. It's more like my actual guitar than the backpacker if you turn the effects off and twiddle the treble up and the bass down -- and so far I'm finding that setting it fully to the "mic" position is less not like a real guitar. Also the bass strings sound more "not like" the real bass strings on a real instrument than the treble strings do. - The model that I ordered is slightly narrower than the "standard" nut width -- two mm -- I would have wanted the full 50mm version, which Guitar Center does not carry. I am debating returning it and ordering the SLG200NW ('wide'). But it's not much of a difference really. - One of the biggest surprises was the "dirty" sound of the attack -- when one touches a string and it's resonating, you get a little "buzz" particularly on the bass strings -- this happens on my real guitar too of course, but the synthesis of the SLG seems to make it more prominent. Technique! Similarly, especially on the bass strings, improper position of finger proximate to frets makes a difference -- and improper finger placement creating interference with other strings too. In a sense this may actually help my playing -- the lovely warmth of my real guitar is perhaps too forgiving maybe of sloppy positioning and assuring clearance of other strings -- so controlling this on this guitar may actually improve my technique. Maybe?

The narrow body pieces no not allow the use of guitar supports so you can avoid use of a foot stool. On my traditional classical I use a support that allows me to hold the guitar in the traditional classical position and I avoid having to use a foot stool. With the Yamaha Silent Guitar I work around this by using a rolled up towel to raise the guita. To provide more secure support, I can add use of the foot stool set to its lowest height.
Two design flaws plus I just don't enjoy it

Two design flaws: The strap buttons screw in and out to attach the top of the "body." They loosen over time as the strap moves making it easy for them to fall out and the guitar to fall on the floor. Also the upper part of the "body" is very "sharp" and digs into my forearm much more than any other guitar leaving a lot of red creases. Aside from these flaws the quality is good but I just don't enjoy playing it possibly due to the action or the lack of tone/authentic feel. I also dislike it when I see people perform with this guitar. People should play real guitars in performance IMO.

Easy to sey up the action to my playability. Shaved nut and saddle. The Truss rod is a real asset. Very well constructed. My problems with this guitar is that it never inspires me to play. My other hollow body nylon acoustic electrics do. I can record them live in my studio and keep the true acoustic beauty. The SLG is easy to record live, has no feedback issues. However...no magic. Just sounds electric or weird. Useful for those recordings only. I have a Fishman Aura Spectrum, a Fishman Tonedeq, MXR Reverb, MXR Carboc Copy, Fishman Loudbox 100. Nothing makes it sound like my nylon acoustic electric guitars. The SLG wins in only one category...No Feedback!!!
Disappointing guitar

Bought this mainly as a travel guitar. My go too guitars are a Taylor 12en and a Córdoba orchestra CE nylons along with a selection of steel stringed instruments. Compared to all those guitars the Yamaha is a disappointment and it serves me right for buying a guitar on line I'd never played. The action is high, even for a nylon, and makes playing tiring. Try to lower the action and there is buzz from the D string. The sound, either through quality headphones or an acoustasonic amplifier is really "synthetic". It is difficult to really pick out the ring of individual strings when playing relatively fast. So it doesn't help much during practice - the sound is just too "blurred". The much talked about STR electronics are not very useful in improving the sound. I'm debating taking it back to guitar center and trading it in. But it has its uses when I need to be quiet like in a hotel while traveling. But that's all it will be used for, because I never enjoy the sound it makes compared to a real nylon acoustic. It's really expensive too, worth $300 at best.
Great for travel or performance with amplifier.

I travel a lot and I've been focusing on classical guitar style. The fret board is very accurate, no string buzzing due to the imperfections that some guitars have, some buzz due to my other fingers. I like playing with headphones. So far that is where I've gotten the best sound. I use a Fishman amp and I'm trying to get a comparable sound from the amp. Neck is very similar to my 2" nut Romero. I read a lot about the action being too high at the nut, so far, it's not an issue. This is a high quality instrument for a modest price. I put it on the screening belt at a TSA checkpoint. The case provides great protection, it's light and the guitar was still in tune when I got to my destination.

I would like to replace the nylon strings, which kind do you recommend for yamaha silent guitar?
Honestly it's all personal preference. If it were for me I would get the D'Addario Pro-Arte strings.submitted7 years ago

When I fingerpick i anchor my right ring finger and pinkie on the guitar. Is there room on the pickguard to do this comfortably?
Yes, there should be plenty of room on the pick guard to do this comfortably.
