Pretty expensive musical toy

Comments about Yamaha MX61 61 Key Music Production Synthesizer:

Brief review. It is more a report about my experience with MX 61 BK.

Before I've started, I want to say big(huge) thanks to all GC people, for providing such great opportunity to gain new experience.
It is great to have a store with such excellent service!

I know GC normally removes (from my review) any references to gratitude to GC.
Please keep it this time.

Now about MX61BK.
1) Software: Cubase. Nothing special. It freezes upon calling of the license window.
It does not allow to use different drivers for different keyboards connected simultaneously. (bummer)
2) Prologue - The link provided within the package does not exist.
Therefore I had to try to use VST from MX61(downloaded from Yamaha website)
This VST is not supported by CuBase AI 8. The VST required CuBase 4.
3) Y3B - Downloaded successfully from Yamaha website. However couldn't find the option to activate this product. Read manual how to install Y3B. Did not help .;)
4) Split function is limited. The split point cannot be assigned to any key. (Makes it pointless to use split with external 88 keyboard )
5) Arpeggio output for individual parts cannot be use for a playback from DAW back on MX. MX sends all arpeggios out, DAW records everything successfully, playback does not sound as the original arpeggio. (Big problem)
6) Performance can have only up-to 4 parts(voices). Not 16 Why?????.(Used Vycro MX Performance Editor).
7) Articulations are weaker than Roland superNatural.
8) I did not expect to have any decent piano sound from MX. Therefore no complains about piano. The rest of sounds it depends on your taste. I found interesting some synth voices as well as tweaking of their parameters.

I have more concerns but it could be enough to describe major problems(I found) with MX61.

FM essentials - I couldn't think of any possible way to integrate those effects with DAW (besides of using an external sampler).
Do not like it at all.

Spent with it (MX61BK) three weeks. Returned with no regrets.

Comments about Yamaha MX61 61 Key Music Production Synthesizer:

Like all Yamaha keyboards, the MX has great sounds. You can adjust sounds and layer 2 sounds. Effects have limits, you can add chorus, or delay, but not both. I have not found out how to add multiple effects. The PC control helps to develop new sounds, but there are still limitations. For the price, it is a great keyboard.

Comments about Yamaha MX61 61 Key Music Production Synthesizer:

This rig is great. Period. If you're looking for something different in sounds or number of keys, OK. But if you want a plethora of sounds that are all good, and you want an easy access synth (for live performance) that's light weight, you gotta check this one out. This is also both pro level and entry level. Bottom line, I would highly recommend this board to anyone!

Comments about Yamaha MX61 61 Key Music Production Synthesizer:

Love the soft keys and very pleased with the sounds. Purchased because of it's light weight as my previous keyboard was very large and heavy.

Great as a brain

About Me Experienced

Pros

  • Realistic Sound

Cons

    Best Uses

    • MIDI

Comments about Yamaha MX61 61 Key Music Production Synthesizer:

I use the 49 key version as a brain for a midi controller. 90% of the use it gets is just the piano voice and the rhodes voices. For this use I think this is the best deal out there, the piano is nearly as nice as a moderate quality softsynth and I play ten times as much now that I don't have to plug my computer to the midi controller. This is definitely the best deal you can get on a piano brain.

I sometimes add bass via an arpegiator and jazz drums via a midi track (the included rhythms are too repetitive for me). The overall sound is very good, though these voices clearly have only one velocity layer. Sometimes I layer multiple voices beneath the piano (by setting them to the same midi channel using vycro mx) and I think the results are interesting and fun to play with. Out of over a thousand voices I would say I use 10 or so. Many of the synths are worthless in my opinion, but I would say the same of many more expensive keyboards too.

The preset performances are mostly things where you hold down a chord and the keyboard plays a song with the arpeggiators. They sound neat for a few minutes, but get pretty old in my opinion.
