Exploring The Squier Contemporary Series Basses | Fender

Squier

Description

The Squier Contemporary Active Jazz Bass is driven by a pair of Squier SQR ceramic humbucking pickups, powered by a Fender-designed active 9-volt preamp, with intuitive controls for volume, pickup blend, traditional tone and stacked boost controls for bass and treble. Its roasted maple neck was chosen for optimal tone and stability, and the sculpted heel design allows for improved access to the upper frets. Additional components include a modern bridge with added mass for improved body resonance, and a set of open-gear tuning machines for smooth tuning action. Eye-catching styling cues include stealthy black hardware and a sleek painted headstock with chrome logos for a premium look.

Bought one, took it home and after the third time playing, every time I plugged it it, it started getting bizarre feedback through the amp and began screaming like a banshee, tried it with 2 different cords and 3 amps. Took it back to exchange it and guitar center didn't have on in stock so I ended up with a bass I didn't love. Ended up returning that one and just got a fender. On the positive side the Squire (before it went haywire sounded good and felt even better), I think I'm going to get another one see if that's a better one, because I really did love it.

With only one night of playing, I have far more "pros" than "cons" on this bass. PROS: I love the color and satin finish of this bass. The all-black hardware is a great contrast to the body color. I also love the black, glossy headstock. The sound is less like a typical Fender Jazz and more like its own unique sound, because of the SQR humbucker pickups. With the brand-new strings, I was surprised how bright this bass sounded. I had to roll off a lot of treble, but I like the fact that the bass has this much high end, should I want it. The middle tone control seemed to do more attenuating of the treble than the stacked boost knobs. The stacked knob does give a good amount of boost and cut, without being extreme. Love the bridge and the roasted maple neck/finger board. The satin finish of the neck is another welcome change, as many of my other basses have gloss finished necks. I generally prefer gloss, but this neck just felt right. This bass does not feel or play as some less expensive version of a Fender bass. Just the opposite. It looks and feels like a far more expensive, quality bass, and I say this as have several other basses, including a Fender USA made Jazz bass. CONS: Small issues, but the black dot fret and side markers are harder to see on the dark roasted maple neck. I'll probably paint the side markers white for more contrast. She's heavy compared to my Ibanez SR700, but I knew that before I bought it and since I mostly sit down now (rather than playing standing up) it's not much of an issue. NEITHER PRO OR CON: The neck seemed thicker than a Jazz and more like a "P" bass width, but I'm used to a super-fast, slim. Ibanez neck, so playing them one after the other, it seemed thicker than I remember with my Fenders. I did get used to it quickly though. IN SUMMARY: I was very pleased with this bass and can't want to bring it to band rehearsal again. It looks and plays like a high-quality bass that would normally cost much more than its retail cost. I already like it far better than several other Squier and Fender Jazz basses I own. I can see this bass quickly becoming one of my top two favorites.

How much does it weigh and where is it made?

    Open Reply - Gear-Support
All basses vary depending on the density of the wood. Even the same model can vary up to 1.5 lbs Manufacturers usually only spec size and type of wood. Bass Guitars are generally between 8.00 and 10.00 lbs. The only way to know the weight of an individual instrument is to weigh it. I'm sorry I don't have one to weigh. This will be approximately 8.5 – 9.5 lbs. The Squier is made in Indonesia
