Seymour Duncan

collapse expand iconDescription

The SH-16 ’59/Custom Hybrid is a medium-output humbucker pickup that sparkles with upper midrange harmonic content and grit. The brainchild of Seymour Duncan incredibly knowledgeable forum members, this humbucker is the result of experimental coil swapping in order to push into new tonal territory. The mismatched coils, and the Alnico 5 bar magnet keep the low end nice and tight, and give the mids a grind that is perfect for hard rock and metal, with plenty of crunch and bite on top as well. When split, you get the Custom’s 7k coil for a more distinct single-coil sound. Pair with the ’59 neck or Jazz neck model for a nicely balanced setup.

Hand built in Santa Barbara, CA, the 59/Custom Hybrid medium-output humbucker pickup uses mismatched coils, an Alnico 5 bar magnet, nickel silver short leg bottom plate, 4-conductor lead wire for multiple wiring options, is vacuum wax potted for squeal-free performance, and is available in standard humbucker or Trembucker spacing. This harmonically rich hybrid humbucker uses one coil from the '59 Model bridge and one coil from the higher-output Duncan Custom model.

Put the SH-16 in a 96 Orville LP after the stock pickup went microphonic. Paired it with a Jazz HB in the neck position and the guitar is now competing with my Gibson USA Traditional LP for #1 despite my subpar soldering skills. Great harmonics, nice bite!

This is a great hard rock pickup. Works well with my Les Paul into a Marshall amp. With gain the pickup sounds great, has a great hard rock full sound. Dial the volume back about half way and you can get nice classic rock tone without having to touch your amp or use pedals. Bass is full and tight. High end is clear and doesn't get fuzzy or undefined with gain. On my LP the coil tap is useful but doesn't sound quite as good as the stock pickup when tapped (Gibson 498). By that I mean on this Les Paul the coil tap is fed through a resister and it's not a true coil split. The stock 498 sounded really nice though the coil tap. The SH16 had a little too much low end to really give you that single coil sound. The pickup looks great on double black too. Easy to wire, and came with mounting ring screws and springs. I matched this pickup with a Vineham v59 neck pickup (a PAF clone). This combo was very useful and the SH16 matched the neck volume and tone very well, unlike the common 498/490 combo which suffers from too bright bridge too dark neck tones. The middle position was excellent much better than I expected. Really nice quack when you turn down the bridge volume and combine both pickups. The pickup has a great all around versatile tone that does hard rock and classic rock. I didn't think it would be as versatile as it is. Mismatched coils and Alnico 5 magnet makes a super tone that surprised me. This pickup has more beef and low mid range than a PAF pickup. It is less harsh and cleans up much better than a high output pickup. Pretty much the best of both worlds.

Versatile pickup for all tone needs, from crunchy riffs to punchy leads. Clean tone is crisp a well. Also great pickup when installed with split coil options.

After searching for a while for a good pickup to replace the stock bridge pup in my PRS SE standard (2016). I thought the stock pup was a little muddy without some clarity between the strings when playing chords. This pickup has all the chunk I wanted with the definition in chords. I also wired for split coil use (using the 59' coil in single coil mode) and it also sounds good. Not as single coil-ly as my Strat, but fairly close and gives a nice change in tone that is less compressed and more open sounding then the pickup in humbucker mode. I got the nickel covered one and I'm typically playing through a Peavey 6505mh and Bassbreaker 112 when practicing at home and a marshall when I have the chance to get a little louder. Also sounds killer through the Plugin Alliance amp sims.

What other pickup should I pair with this one and should this be placed at the neck or the bridge position?

The Seymour Duncan SH-18 Whole Lotta Humbucker Electric Guitar Pickup would be a good choice. Either one of these would work in the neck or bridge position.
