Gibson Custom

collapse expand iconDescription

The Gibson Custom Murphy Lab 1960 Les Paul Junior Double Cut is an exacting replica of a classic, time-tested design. Originally marketed as a beginner’s guitar, the Junior later found favor with pro players like Billy Joe Armstrong, Johnny Thunders, Keith Richards, Peter Tosh and countless others. This Junior reissue captures all of that vintage swagger with a single Dogear P90; an impeccable Ultra Heavy aged finish is icing on the cake. Available now at Guitar Center, the ’60 Les Paul Junior Double Cut might just become your six-string savior.

Gibson Custom 1960 Les Paul Junior Double Cut Main Features

  • 1-piece solid mahogany body with Ultra Heavy aging
  • Mahogany neck with ’60s SlimTaper profile, Indian rosewood fretboard
  • Custom Dogear P90, volume and tone controls
  • Wraparound bridge/tailpiece, Kluson strip tuners with white buttons

Classic Construction & Authentic Aging

Gibson spec’d solid mahogany for the body, a warm and mellow tonewood. It provides a stable sonic base that allows the single-coil pickup to shine. The finish is courtesy of Tom Murphy's team at Gibson Custom. For the last 25 years, he’s perfected the art and science of aging instruments. This Les Paul Junior goes through his Ultra Heavy aging process, equivalent to decades of hard playing and onstage abuse. Heavy arm and pick wear has worn off the finish in some spots, exposing raw wood. The neck and peghead both show scrapes and scratches; the back is covered with major buckle rash.

Period Correct Neck

For many, Gibson hit the sweet spot with necks in 1960. Gone were the fat necks of the ’50s. The new decade brought a slimmer profile for a faster feel. That's exactly what you'll find on the Gibson Custom Les Paul Junior. The mahogany neck is set in a long tenon joint to maximize sustain; a double cutaway design puts all 22 frets within reach. The Indian rosewood fretboard has rounded edges, making it play like a true vintage instrument.

Pickup From the Past

There’s no room to hide with a single pickup guitar—it’s all about the player. The custom Dogear P90 in the 1960 Les Paul Jr. proves that less is more. Gibson surface mounts this single coil for a brighter, tighter tone with plenty of power. Keep it clean, or add gain for crunch rhythm or leads.

Historic Hardware

The Murphy Lab Les Paul Junior Double Cut pairs Kluson strip tuners with a wraparound bridge/tailpiece. Nickel plated, it’s all heavily aged to match the finish.

The Gibson Custom Murphy Lab 1960 Les Paul Junior Double Cut comes with a certificate of authenticity and an aged brown and pink Lifton reissue 5-latch hard case.
