90% as good as a Gibson for 20% the price

For a little over a year, I worked in a small boutique custom shop which was owned and operated by a master luthier who had previously worked for Fender in the 60s and had built guitars has entire life. I learned so much from him. During my time there I repaired, set up, and maintained hundreds of Gibsons, including custom Les Pauls, and other crazy guitars that I honestly had no business touching; as well as helping build hand-made custom guitars at the highest level of quality we were capable of. I'm no luthier by any means, but my point is that I know guitars inside and out, I've held and maintained many irreplaceable/"mythic" guitars... and I know good and bad quality when I see it. I have a 1999 Gibson Les Paul Standard that is my baby - the crown jewel of my collection - and I'm not going to lie to you, a real-deal plekked Gibson from the right era *can* be better. But not 5 times better. This Epiphone is basically 90% of a Gibson at 20% the price. The biggest thing I want to call out is that the fretwork on this thing is just bonkers for the price. I level, crown, and polish the frets on most of my import guitars to get the action down to around 1mm or less (where I like it) without buzz; but I didn't need to for this Epiphone. I may have gotten lucky, but right out of the box I was able to set it up, plug it in, and then proceed to slay dragons with it. I bought a pair of Gibson 498t/490r pickups before getting an Epiphone expecting to swap them in, but I haven't yet and just don't need to. The tone is brutal and slightly more modern sounding with the pickups that it came with. Finish has no flaws, stays in tune, intonates well, sounds good, crazy good fretwork, looks good on the wall and on stage, and it's not so irreplaceable that I'm afraid to keep it on a stand outside of the case. This is one of the best deals I've gotten in my 23 years of playing.

Revised Review - had to return it to Nashville

OK, it played great for a while after getting it set up. For about three months. Then the fret buzz came back. So I took it back for adjustment again. The Guitar Tech at the store adjusted it and told me if if went out again soon, call Epiphone. Three months later, it was buzzing again. They guy at Gibson had me take it to Guitar Center (3 hours away) to have a certified tech check it. He adjusted it, but saw a defect (hump) in the neck. He told me that if the buzz came back soon, return it to Gibson/Epiphone. It was buzzing the next day. It could not be repaired, but they replaced it with a very nice upgrade, so no complaints with service. Disappointed though, it was fun to play and looked nice; I expected better. BUt the upgraded replacement is very very nice too

  • Very happy with my new Les Paul

I purchased my Epi Trad Pro IV in store at GC after demo and comparison to other Epi Les Pauls that I liked too. 5 stars because it meets my criteria of appearance, affordability, quality specs, sound and playability. The factory set up is on point, no issues with the nut or fret buzz. On my guitar, you can feel the fret ends more on 16-22, no big deal to me personally. I like to play on the clean side as a beginning at-home hobbyist and my LP sounds great at mid to lower volumes. The GC photos do represent what you see in person. In the Q&A section below, someone asked about the "worn" description. GC answer was "it looks used". IMO this guitar looks brand new with no signs of use intentionally built into the finish. Vintage styling with the matte/satiny/slight wood grain finish paired with an ivory color pick guard and binding is what I see. I chose the Wine Red version and I'm very happy with my new Les Paul. Thanks to the GC staff and Epiphone!

I use this guitar primarily to record at home. It is very nice. Feels pretty good for the price. Pickups are decent, but a little muddy in the bottom spectrum. Volume controls allow you to do coil splitting, which is great for recording clean. One thing that's a bit annoying is that my guitar does not hold tune very well. I pretty much have to tune it up every time I play. Maybe it's just factory strings. Otherwise came well setup. Nice clean low action, very good distance to pickups. I play mostly heavy metal and this guitar sounds great. #sweepstakes

The specks say the guitar comes with gold hardware and locking tuners. The hardware is chrome and the tuners are not locking.

Guitar feels and sounds great. Not too heavy and a joy to play on. I still need to get the guitar set up, but the tone and feel out of the gatr is good for now. The finish is nice, but not as sheen as it appears in pictures, so expect a more wooden look if you order the guitar online. #sweepstakes

    Weight of the guitar?

    Open Reply - Gear-Support
All guitars vary depending on the density of the wood. Manufacturers usually only spec size and type of wood. Guitars are generally between 6 and 12 lbs. They can be more. The only way to know the weight of an individual instrument is to weigh it. I'm sorry but I don't have one to weigh. This will be approximately 8.5 lbs
