Overview

EMG Pickups, along with legendary artist Geezer Butler, have collaborated to develop the GZR-P and GZR-PJ signature bass sets. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bass player started working with EMG founder Rob Turner in 2011, looking to find the classic bass tone he had in Black Sabbath's early days. As Geezer and Black Sabbath moved from studio to touring in 2013, the final component of getting the classic Geezer tone was in play, the rigors of a world tour.

To recapture Geezer's early Black Sabbath tone, it meant a new EMG vintage-style passive P & PJ design with a few modern touches. The all solderless P set uses Alnico 5 pole pieces and custom-wound coils for just the right amount of punch and grit. The J (PJ set) also uses Alnico 5 poles and features two custom-wound split-coils that both eliminate the noise and hum usually associated with early '70s bass pickups and allow for more power and volume than any other standard single-coil J, giving this set remarkable balance between the P & J. The result is unmistakable early Geezer Butler bass tone with deep, tight low end that you can hear on "Iron Man," "War Pigs" and "Paranoid." Said Geezer, "I never felt comfortable giving my name to any other pickups, but this time these have blown me away."

Comments about EMG Geezer Butler Signature PJ Bass Pickup Set:

I am a guitar player primarily and only recently started playing bass. I purchased this PJ set to replace an active set-up on an inexpensive bass. This set provides a nice old school P-bass sound and with the J-bass pickup, you get that nice growl. The set is balanced for a PJ set, though you do have to tone the P-bass pickup down just a tad to allow the J-bass pickup to shine. Not unusual for any PJ set. Don't be concerned that this is a metal-only pickup given the Geezer Butler name. This is a very versatile pickup set - great for all genres of music. Bluesy, Jazzy, very well rounded in my opinion. This was also my first experience with a no-solder installation. Very easy installation that most anyone can manage. I like it a lot and the price is reasonable. I would buy these again. Very nice pickup.

Comments about EMG Geezer Butler Signature PJ Bass Pickup Set:

Okay, so first off, these sound great. Very vintage, punchy and loud. Nice upgrade, totally worth it.

But, installation was an something of an ordeal (caused, no doubt by my inexperience with replying pickups). My Squier VM P/J has a barrel jack. So you have to solder. Already disappointed. Try to do so and fail miserably, have second degree burns to prove it. Take to local GC, and am told it's $30 for one solder. So what. right? I paid it.

Get home, plug-in at low volume and -- nothing. Go back to GC and ask the tech what's up. He swears he opened it, installed and tested them. Plugs-in, moment of truth. Faint sound from a big stack. Has to crawl the volume juts to get a moderate sound. Says I'm good to go.

The pickups were set too low. Way too low. I don't expect a set-up for my $30, but come on. Go to raise the pickups, no foam or springs included. Use a kitchen sponge that I cut.

Finally good to go. And, as I said, totally worth it.

Comments about EMG Geezer Butler Signature PJ Bass Pickup Set:

I am still learning on bass, having started 10 months ago, but have been a musician for over 40 years. These pickups definitely took my beginner-level instrument to pro-quality sound in one swoop! The sound is much more "full" and "real" than before. Best of all is that noise / hum has been reduced to zero! E-Z install, included all I needed to replace my original pots, wiring, AND pickups. Top-quality product and packaging. VERY glad I made this upgrade. Next upgrade will be to file my frets.
