Great Budget Bass - Yamaha Nails It!

My quest for a low cost (ok, cheap!) bass has led me to this cool Yamaha TRBX174EW. Been looking for bass I can keep out and ready for use when ever I need it and use at gigs which I rather not take my Fodera or Roscoe basses. After reading reviews and looking through all the low cost basses available, choose the TRBX. Yamaha has always been known for good quality even with their low cost line of instruments. Well got it today and so far happy with my purchase. This model features a mahogany body and a really thin but beautiful Mango Wood veneer top. The headstock also sports a Mango Wood veneer. It features a PJ pickup setup and is a passive bass. The controls are volume/volume/tone. The black knobs are plastic and a bit cheap looking. So ordered some black metal replacement knobs. The bridge is a standard vintage type. I also ordered a higher mass bridge to replace it. The bolt-on neck is 24 fret and is a one piece maple with a sonokeling (in the rosewood family) fretboard. The fretwork isn't too bad. The edges of a couple of the frets could have been filed down better, but not blaring bad. One thing to note, the headstock is not a tilt back type. There is a string retainer bar on the front to pull the strings down over the nut. I mention this because most basses in this price range that have tilted headstocks, the headstock is glued onto the neck. The TRBX is completely one piece from top to bottom. The nut is just a hair wider then a Jazz bass, and the neck has a nice chunky profile which I like. The back of the neck has a natural finish. Out of box the setup wasn't too bad and just required a little tweaking. The weight is probably a bit under 9 lbs. The tone is pretty punchy with both pickups up full. Has a great P bass tone when soloing the neck P pickup. It came with round wound strings that did not sound to bad. But after 10 minutes of playing my fingers were dirty the strings! So nixed them and put on a fresh set of D'Addario XL170s.

Doesn't look like the image at all

The first thing I noticed when I unboxed the bass is how different it looks from the picture. Upon doing some research, I found that not all "copies" of this bass look as nice. For reference, scroll down to the review by Mike. I think I will return this.

  • All mango basses have varying grains. Find one you like

Found one in stock at Guitar Center. There I could inspect it and try it out also. FYI, all natural finished woods vary, so look in person first, to see if you like the way it looks. I liked it, so I bought it! All Mango basses have unique grains and colors. If you order online it will not look like the stock photo. Every one is going to be very different grain and color from each other. Mango wood has very light and very dark colors to it depending on the tree and the cut, so some are light, some mottled, some are mostly light, some mostly dark, some light, with only a little to no dark sections, some even have figure to it and are hard to come by at the regular price. If you don't like the looks, don't buy it. But if you do buy, it will likely surprise you how light and resonant it is. Excellent finish. The neck is finished satin, so fingers just glide nicely. I have 3 basses of different brands and this mango one sounds amazing. I can't stop playing it for hours.

This is a great looking bass. It plays pretty good for the price. Hard to beat in this price range. Especially with the black Friday sale price.

  • I haven't yet seen a "bad" Yamaha instrument.

For the price, this thing is beautiful. I've seen other reviews where they complained about the grain patterns, but mine is gorgeous. The fret ends are smooth, and the setup was pretty close out of the box with minimal fret buzz. The sound from the pickups is full and toneful. The included strings should be discarded as soon as possible! #sweepstakes

You can of course get a nicer bass but not for anywhere near this cheap. When I got mine in the mail I was so happy with the quality for my first bass, so glad I decided to pull the trigger on this one.

A Precision bass would have just the P-bass pickups, this one has both the P and J bass pickups so technically it would be a PJ bass.

What type of strings and strings size does it come from the manufacturer?

The type of strings that come on them are Yamaha strings, which I believe are actually made by D'Addario. And typically they are light gauge strings (.040-.095)
